Since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made the decision to step down as working royals in 2020, the Duchess of Sussex has only returned to London a few times and hasn’t been back since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in 2022. She did not accompany Harry to King Charles’ coronation in 2023 or a recent service in which the duke marked the 10th anniversary of the Invictus Games he founded.

However, a royal expert believes Meghan may want to travel to the U.K. to do something for the king, but that doesn’t mean the monarch would be too welcoming.

Royal commentator believes Meghan will return to the U.K. for one reason

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams predicted that Meghan will stay away from England for the “foreseeable future” because of how “unpopular” she is.

“She is deeply unpopular here and knows it,” he told Express. “The polls simply confirm it and the media detest her. So she will stay away for the foreseeable future. With the royal rift as deep as it clearly is she was wise not to stray beyond Heathrow en route to Nigeria, after Harry went to St. Paul’s commemorative service for Invictus.”

But Fitzwilliams thinks the former Suits star may decide at some point that she wants her children to see their grandfather, the king, as Archie and Lilibet both have a prince and princess title now.

He opined: “She might, of course, bring Archie and Lili to see their grandfather, King Charles, but the circumstances where that might be a possibility currently clearly do not apply. However, if she were to her reception would obviously be more muted.”

Source claims King Charles won’t welcome the duchess with ‘open arms’

According to Fitzwilliams, “The king did not appreciate Harry’s interview on Good Morning America after they met in February when he learned of his father’s diagnosis and when he talked of family unity.” Therefore, a visit with his grandkids that wouldn’t be announced ahead of time and a promise that the details wouldn’t be disclosed to the public is the only way the king would agree to it.

And even then, the only purpose of the visit would be to see his grandchildren as insiders claim he’s in “no hurry to welcome” Meghan back with “open arms” and prefers not to “dwell” on the fallout.

A royal source told The Daily Beast: “Relations are as bad as they have ever been. Nothing has been resolved. But Charles does not spend a great deal of time dwelling on the matter because he is so busy.”

As for future meetings with Prince Harry, another source added that the king “will always have a place in his heart for Harry” but he doesn’t need or want the drama at this time and would rather have “peace” for the rest of his reign.
