Royal Watcher Says Prince Charles and Prince William Are Not Appropriate Replacements for Queen Elizabeth II
While it’s not something anyone likes to think about there will come a time when Queen Elizabeth II is no longer with us. And when that day arrives, her eldest son, Prince Charles, will become king. However, not everyone wants to accept that fact and now one royal watcher is calling not only Charles but also Prince William unfit replacements for the queen.
Here’s more on that and the suggestion for what to do about the next monarch. Plus, the royal who also previously questioned if Charles could handle the job.
This person said neither prince is ‘fit’ to take over for Queen Elizabeth
A man named Graham Smith spoke to The Express and said that he doesn’t agree that the Prince of Wales should automatically become the head of state upon the queen’s death.
“I think we need to move away from people sitting back as spectators being told who their head of state is going to be,” Smith opined. “We need to have a choice; it is clear people want to have a choice. For years there has been polling saying that there is no majority in favor of either Charles, William, or other royals succeeding the queen.”
Smith added, “Prince Charles is not as well-liked or supported. He is also much easier to challenge and criticize, the problem with him is that he cannot help himself when it comes to interfering with politics.”
It’s not surprising that Smith has these views since he is the CEO of Republic, an organization that campaigns for the abolishment of the monarchy and the replacement of the monarch with an elected, democratic head of state. But another person who was once very close to the Prince of Wales also questioned if he could do the job.
A familiar face also questioned if Prince Charles is fit to be king
Smith isn’t the only person who raised doubts about the heir apparent taking over for Queen Elizabeth. Princess Diana also questioned if Charles is fit to be the next king.
During her explosive Panorama interview in 1995, the Princess of Wales told Martin Bashir that she didn’t know if the prince was really cut out for such a “suffocating” role.
“Being Prince of Wales produces more freedom now, and being king would be a little bit more suffocating,” the princess said. “And because I know the character I would think that the top job, as I call it, would bring enormous limitations to him, and I don’t know whether he could adapt to that.”
Bashir then asked Diana if it was her wish that the crown go to Prince William instead of Prince Charles. To which the princess replied, “My wish is that [Charles] finds peace of mind, and from that follows other things, yes.”
What will happen when the queen dies?
As first in the line of succession to the British throne, Charles will automatically become king the moment his mother takes her last breath. This is to ensure that the throne is never vacant.
Although he will succeed his mother the same day she passes away, his official coronation won’t take place until a few months later. The reason is due to the tradition of allowing an appropriate length of time between a monarch’s passing and holding a celebration to crown their heir.
So whether Smith or anyone else wants to see it happen barring any tragedy, Prince Charles will succeed his mother one day just like Prince William will then succeed his father when the time comes.
