RuPaul: Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain Loved 1 of His Songs
RuPaul is most known for RuPaul’s Drag Race, but he was once most known for his songs and his modeling work. Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain really enjoyed one of his songs. This song became RuPaul’s biggest hit in the United States, but it was eclipsed in the United Kingdom by a duet RuPaul performed with a superstar. During an interview, RuPaul discussed meeting Cobain, the other members of Nirvana, and Courtney Love.
What happened when RuPaul met Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain
During an interview with The A.V. Club, RuPaul discussed meeting Cobain and Love. “I literally met them on the step-and-repeat red carpet at the MTV Awards, and Kurt Cobain told me, ‘You know, we went to see you perform in Seattle, but you had already performed and left by the time we got there,'” he said. “Because it was one of those gigs where I think I may have gone on at like 10 or something like that, and that tickled me. These are kids who come from the same irreverent, hippie, bohemian mentality that I came from.” RuPaul said the members of Nirvana understood drag in a way others did not.
What Kurt Cobain thought of RuPaul and 1 of his songs
RuPaul took pictures with the rock icons. He explained how Cobain, the other members of Nirvana, and Love reacted to his work. “So Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love and the other kids in that band loved it, and you could see it in their faces when they’re taking the pictures,” he said. “They’re not going boo, or it’s not like a joke. It’s like, ‘This is f****** cool.’ And they were so cool about it that they came and appeared on my Christmas special that year.”
According to Entertainment Weekly, Cobain really enjoyed RuPaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work)” a lot. He named it as one of his favorite songs of 1993. RuPaul actually released the song in 1992; however, the track did not reach its peak on the Billboard Hot 100 until the following year.
The way the world reacted to the song
Cobain probably wasn’t the only one who enjoyed “Supermodel (You Better Work).” The track reached No. 45 on the Billboard Hot 100, staying on the chart for 20 weeks. It’s RuPaul’s highest-charting single in the U.S. The song’s parent album, Supermodel of the World, was a hit as well. Supermodel of the World reached No. 109 on the Billboard 200, lasting on the chart for six weeks.
“Supermodel (You Better Work)” charted somewhat higher in the U.K. The Official Charts Company reports the track reached No. 39 in the U.K. and remained on the chart for four weeks. Notably, its success in the U.K. would be eclipsed by the version of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” that RuPaul performed with Elton John, which hit No. 7. While “Supermodel (You Better Work)” might not be as famous as some of Nirvana’s songs, it connected with Cobain.
