RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 14 introduces 14 brand new queens to compete for the crown, including two transgender women and a straight cisgender male. Entertainment Weekly talked with Maddy about her experience with the art of drag and her journey getting onto season 14. “I identify as a cisgender straight man, but I’m gender non-conforming in my presentation,” Maddy said. “I can go out, do drag, put on makeup and heels, but it doesn’t alter who I am as a person or shape who or what I am.”

Maddy continued: “The only pushback I’ve ever had was people outside the drag community, people who aren’t in the scene but just want to have opinions about it. It sucks when people who don’t know you have the biggest opinions about you. But, let’s show ’em, baby!”

RuPaul’s Drag Race fans previously celebrated the show’s decision to cast its first AFAB (assigned female at birth) queen Victoria Scone and its first trans male drag queen Gottmik. However, the fandom responded with a more negative response to Maddy’s casting. One Redditor called it a “massive f*ck you to the queer community” to bring a straight cisgender male queen to the show before introducing other identities within the LGBTQ community, such as lesbian-identified drag contestants.

Another Redditor commented, “It’s weird for me as a bi person to know that cis straightness is probably going to be talked about meaningfully on the show before bisexuality/pansexuality.” One Twitter user wrote, “Straight people already take up the vast majority of TV shows and movies.”

However, another Redditor shared that they hope Maddy’s casting “will possibly open some minds about gender and masculinity.” RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 8 winner Bob the Drag Queen chooses to focus on other aspects of the casting, tweeting “If she’s fierce … werq. If not, she’ll lose. What I’m excited about is that we have another trans person of color represented on TV.”
