‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 12 premieres during February 2020

This reality series is sashaying to a new television network. With season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race premiering February 2020, RuPaul is already looking to the future, announcing that the next television network housing Drag Race-related content is Showtime.

However, some fans wonder if Showtime’s season will be All-Stars 5 or a completely new and fresh version of this reality competition show. Still, Deadline reassures fans that this season gives former contestants a “second chance to earn the crown, win a cash prize of $100,000 and an opportunity to leave their legacy in the ‘Drag Race Hall of Fame.’”

With a few spin-off series’ already released and available for binge-watching, some fans suspect that this spin-off could follow a different format than previous seasons of All-Stars. Because Deadline reports this is a “special season,” viewers speculate this could be the premiere of Celebrity Drag Race, a series teased by former contestant Trixie Mattel and RuPaul herself.

RuPaul’s Drag Race: All-Stars is a culture-defining show that fits perfectly within the contemporary programming Showtime offers in both scripted and unscripted,” said Jana Winograde, President of Entertainment, Showtime Networks Inc, according to Deadline.

“We are excited to take advantage of our relationship with our new sister company VH1 to present a special edition of this sensational series and bring in this passionate and robust fanbase,” she continued. “It’s the latest example of how we can leverage our combined portfolio to provide new experiences for our audience.”

Showtime’s season of Drag Race premieres after season 12, and just in time for Pride season. Deadline reports this “special season” premieres on June 5 at 8 pm ET/PT, right after the season finale of season 12 of RuPaul’s Drag Race on VH1.

There’s no word, however, if or when it will make its debut on other television networks, Logo or VH1, or on World of Wonder’s streaming platform, WOW Presents Plus. (Although some seasons are RuPaul’s Drag Race: Untucked are housed on that subscription service.)

This is not the first time RuPaul’s Emmy award-winning television show made the switch to a new television network. While some seasons were originally and exclusively available on Logo, the series made the switch to VH1 a few years ago. There’s where the 12th season of Drag Race will premiere, on Feb. 28, 2020.
