Ginger Minj was a contestant on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ season 7

She slayed the Snatch Game as Adele, and she later earned praise for her singing voice. Ginger Minj was a contestant on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 7, making it to the finals before being eliminated.

This contestant was also a member of the unofficial “Bitter Old Lady Brigade,” which featured some experienced pageant queens from this season. In fact, Ginger Minj had been performing in live shows and competing in pageants long before RuPaul featured her on Drag Race.

How did Ginger Minj get her drag name?

According to Drag Race fandom, Ginger Minj needed to raise money to compete in her first pageant. At the time, she was working at Sleuths Mystery Dinner, and the owner offered to sponsor her in exchange for using a company-related drag name — Ginger Minj.

“In Sleuth’s legend, an actor playing Simon, an old Scottish character from the show called Squires Inn, went out to mingle with the crowd before the show,” the article reads. “He went up to a red-headed woman and yelled across the room to his co-actor, ‘Hey Nigel, do you think that one’s got a ginger minge?’”

Knowing that this was British slang for “red vagina,” the woman subsequently punched him in the jaw. The story became a legend and, for this performer who was originally doing drag under her real name, this drag name was a perfect fit.

“I think Ginger Minj fits my persona very well,” the Drag Race contestant said during an interview with Watermark Online. “It’s crass, and it’s trashy, but it sounds classy. At least until you know what it really means.”

Ginger Minj wouldn’t be the only contestant who explained the origin of their drag name. Trixie Mattel’s name is a nod to the toy company Mattel. Katya Zamolodchikova’s name pays homage to her Russian heritage, as well as one of her favorite Russian gymnasts.
