‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’: Thorgy Thor Slapped Bob the Drag Queen the Night She Won the Crown
RuPaul’s Drag Race — along with its international spin-offs — has introduced hundreds of talented drag artists to the world over the past decade. With Drag Race and its All Stars companion, 18 queens have been crowned by RuPaul as some of the most incredible performers in the world.
The live ‘Drag Race’ finales aren’t actually live
Ever since season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race in 2012, the coronation of the winning queen doesn’t take place on the Drag Race main stage. Instead, all the queens come back for a supersized pre-recorded finale in front of a large audience.
In more recent years, the finale has been the final test for the remaining queens to snatch the crown in a “lip sync for the crown” tournament. This year’s finale was unique as the top three queens all had to show their skills from their living room as a result of the coronavirus pandemic hitting Los Angeles just weeks before the season 12 finale was scheduled to be filmed.
What makes the grand finales unique is that no winner is actually crowned that night, as audience members would quickly spoil the results on social media before the finale has aired. To remedy this, they film alternate endings that have each queen winning, and then show the actual winner the night the finale airs.
As a result, the winner of each season finds out they’ve won when everyone else does. Ever since season 5, the top queens have had cameras on them as they watch the finale and find out who won together, so their reactions are completely genuine.
Bob the Drag Queen was an unsurprising winner
Season 8 of RuPaul’s Drag Race has been referred to by queens such as Thorgy Thor as “The Bob Show” due to Bob the Drag Queen’s domination of many challenges and overall presence. Bob the Drag Queen eventually won the crown thanks to her charisma, uniqueness, nerve, and talent, and her ability to make audiences laugh.
When the top 3 queens of the season — Bob the Drag Queen, Naomi Smalls, and Kim Chi — watched the finale together, Smalls and Chi were not surprised that Bob was announced as the winner. Kim Chi was looking at Bob in the seconds leading up to the announcement and happily said “I knew it” as Bob was crying.
Thorgy Thor slapped Bob the Drag Queen after she won
Bob the Drag Queen was overwhelmed by her win, and couldn’t contain her happiness as she received her $100,000 prize.
In an appearance on Tiffany “New York” Pollard’s show Brunch With Tiffany, Bob opened up about her win and what she’s done since being on the show. She also spilled some insider information about what went down just minutes after she’d won the Drag Race crown.
Backstage at the finale watch party event, Bob ran into Thorgy Thor, a fellow season 8 contestant who had many choice words for Bob and found her to be annoying throughout the season.
“I walked on stage, I had a check for $100,000 in my hand, I had a scepter and a crown,” Bob recounted. “Thorgy’s coming down the stairs, and she goes, ‘Bob!'” while gesturing with open arms as if she’s about to give her a congratulatory hug.
Instead, Thorgy slapped Bob across the face, and Bob didn’t even know how to react. It wasn’t a hard slap, but Bob told Pollard that her mother used to tell her to not put your hands on her face unless you wanted to fight. Pollard responded saying Thorgy Thor was jealous of Bob’s victory.
“How could you not be jealous?” Bob said in reference to the event. “I’m standing there in a gorgeous gown with a crown and a scepter that you wanted and a check for $100,000.”
