Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes are among Hollywood’s most elusive couples. Fans assumed they met in 2011 while filming The Place Beyond the Pines. However, Mendes said she met Gosling before then, adding to the couple’s mystery. She and Gosling also never confirmed that they tied the knot, though they’ve called each other “husband” and “wife” numerous times.
The couple has two daughters: Esmeralda Amada, 9, and Amada Lee, 8. In early 2024, Gosling and Mendes moved out of Los Angeles to Montecito to benefit their kids. Unfortunately, a source told Life & Style in August 2024 that the move isn’t going as well as planned. While Mendes prefers to live outside the city, Gosling wants more “action.”
“It was Eva who pushed for the move,” the source claimed. “She wanted to raise [their daughters] outside of Los Angeles, and Ryan agreed. The problem is, he’s restless and needs the action of a big city.”
The source added that Mendes and Gosling are “opposites,” as Mendes is “extremely private” and “paranoid,” whereas Gosling “loves adventures.”
“The family has spent hardly any time in Montecito this summer,” the insider added. “That works well for Ryan, but it hasn’t been great for putting down roots. Eva has more control in the relationship, and the kids are the thing keeping them together.”

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling don’t openly discuss their marriage often. However, a source verified to People in March 2024 that the couple cares deeply about their relationship.
“Eva and Ryan love their life,” the source said. “It’s admirable how they’ve been able to create balance and boundaries. They care so much about their marriage and just want their girls to live a happy life.”
The source also noted that the couple’s kids are the “most important” aspect of their lives, and they don’t want their daughters to grow up around other celebrity children.
“And their girls are thriving,” the source claimed. “They left LA to live a bit further north, away from Hollywood. They didn’t want the girls to grow up around other celebrity kids.”
Mendes and Gosling love to involve their whole family in activities. “As a family, they enjoy visiting the desert and the beach,” another source said in August 2023. “They are a very active family. Eva and Ryan seem happy. They tend to be flirty and hold hands. It’s cute.”
An insider alleged that the couple was living ‘separate’ lives in early 2024
Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes seem like the perfect couple. However, a source told In Touch Weekly in March 2024 that they weren’t as close as they appeared, as Mendes didn’t attend the 96th annual Academy Awards to share in Gosling’s Barbie success.
“People were surprised Eva wasn’t by Ryan’s side,” the insider alleged. “It was a huge evening for him, and she was nowhere to be found.”
Mendes was reportedly spotted backstage earlier in the evening, and she posted a tribute to him online. However, the insider said fans should see her absence as a red flag.
“Ryan and Eva don’t like to go to events together, but the Oscars were different,” the source added. “It just goes to show how separate their lives are.”
So, what’s the glaring issue for the couple? It may have to do with their parenting choices. “Ryan goes to set and enjoys his work and interacts with his colleagues, while she’s sitting home caring for their kids with no other social life,” the insider said.
