How Ryan Gosling and ‘The Notebook’ Ruined R. Kelly’s Marriage
Before R. Kelly found himself in trouble with the law, one of the singer’s most pressing problems was with his marriage. The singer once found himself in a highly publicized divorce with his ex-wife Andrea Kelly. Many factors included the demise of their relationship, including Ryan Gosling and his hit 2004 movie The Notebook.
Who was R. Kelly’s ex-wife Andrea Kelly?
According to ABC News, Andrea Kelly, also known as Drea, was a professional dancer and actor. She met R. Kelly when she was 19 years old, in which she acted as one of his backup dancers. She eventually became the hitmaker’s choreographer, while at the same time engaging in an intimate relationship with him.
“I can’t say that I remember, like, when it changed for me or when it was just like, ‘Oh, I think I love him.’ I do remember when he said he fell in love,” Drea said. “He said, ‘I was sitting on the back of the tour bus reading the Bible.’ And he said it was something about that moment that he fell in love. He said, ‘And you remind me of my mama.'”
The two would later go on to marry for 13 years before divorcing in 2014.
How Ryan Gosling and ‘the Notebook’ ruined R. Kelly’s marriage
As some know, the singer and his wife had some rough years after their marriage. Both parties told several stories as to why their marriage didn’t work out. However, one reason the singer gave for their eventual break-up was watching the 2004 movie The Notebook. The film left such an impact on R. Kelly that he credited it for splitting up him and his wife.
“As the film credits started to roll, I couldn’t move,” Kelly wrote in his memoir Soulcaster (via Yahoo.) “I burst into tears. People walking past me patted me on the back, trying to console me. The Notebook was beautiful, and I was crying because its hero and heroine had died together…But I was also crying because I remembered a Valentine’s day – when a helicopter dropped a rainfall of roses – that had come and gone…My marriage had died. And there was nothing I could do to bring it back.”
But Drea believed otherwise. Due to the timeline of events, she noted that the movie couldn’t have had anything to do with their divorce.
“We had separated for 6 years at that point! The movie definitely did not end our relationship,” she said.
Andrea Kelly had mixed feelings about R. Kelly’s guilty verdict
Andrea Kelly revealed that she had conflicting reactions regarding R. Kelly being found guilty of his alleged crimes. Because of these feelings, she wasn’t sure how to respond.
“I sit in a very difficult place because unlike the rest of his victims, I also share children with him.” Drea Kelly said according to Yahoo. “I wear the hat of a survivor and an advocate, but I also wear the hat of a mother and an ex-wife…”
Drea Kelly and R. Kelly’s children also played a part in her response to the verdict.
“At the end of the day, you cannot walk away from your bloodline,” Drea later said. “I have the ability to separate and distance myself from it, but his blood runs through my children’s veins and it’s part of their DNA and they can’t escape it even if they wanted to. So it’s very difficult for me to sit in that position.”
