Ryan Reynolds Tried to Get Wesley Snipes to Break Character in ‘Blade Trinity’
As most know, Ryan Reynolds worked with Wesley Snipes on the set of Blade Trinity. There have been some reports claiming that actor Wesley Snipes went a bit too method for the film. The actor refusing to break character on set eventually led to some uncomfortable moments for his crew. But Reynolds, once revealed that he tried to get Snipes to break character, and made the best out of the situation when he couldn’t.
Wesley Snipes allegedly stayed in character for ‘Blade Trinity’
Filming Blade Trinity was reportedly a difficult task for everyone involved. But Snipes’ alleged behavior on the set might not have helped matters. In an interview with AV Club, comedic actor Patton Oswalt gave his version of what it was like to film Blade Trinity.
“When I met him I was like, ‘Hi!’ And he was like, ‘I’m Blade.’ And also, Natasha Lyonne was on that set, and she was going through some kind of mental breakdown,” Oswalt recalled. “Wesley is all boundaries, and she has no boundaries. She played a blind computer expert. So the first scene they had together, she put her hand right on his face, and he just recoiled. It was awesome.”
Because of Snipes’ behavior on set, Oswalt claimed the actors turned to improvisation to make their shoot fun.
“A lot of the lines that Ryan Reynolds has were just a result of Wesley not being there. We would all just think of things for him to say and then cut to Wesley’s face not doing anything because that’s all we could get from him. It was kind of funny. We were like, ‘What are the worst jokes and puns that we can say to this guy?’” Oswalt added.
Ryan Reynolds tried to get Wesley Snipes to break character
In a resurfaced interview with IGN, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds confirmed that Snipes didn’t really break character. So much so that Reynolds claimed he’d never met Snipes.
“I only met Blade, and he is a method actor. Say what you want about that style of acting, I have the utmost respect for whatever it takes to get through this process,” Reynolds shared.
Reynolds also found it to be a personal challenge to try and break Snipes out of his Blade character. According to Reynolds, however, Snipes wouldn’t budge. But Free Guy star’s interaction with Snipes led to some entertaining ad-libbing that was kept in the film.
“There’s a moment in the movie where I look up at Jessica and I swear to God, I didn’t even know the cameras were rolling anymore and I say, ‘He hates me, doesn’t he?’ And she’s like, ‘Yeah.’ I’m just saying this about my relationship as Ryan Reynolds to this guy, and it works. The ad-libs are just born of that,” he added.
It wasn’t the only time Reynolds went off-script for the movie.
“There’s another one where I do a dime-store psychoanalysis of him where I say, ‘You ever thought about sitting down and talking with someone, getting in touch with your inner child, and also you might want to try blinking once in a while.’ He just looks at me like he’s gonna turn me into a** pulp,” he added.
Wesley Snipes denied Patton Oswalt’s allegations
Wesley Snipes fairly recently addressed the statements made by his former co-star Oswalt. The New Jack actor spoke to The Guardian to clear the air and provide his version of events.
“Let me tell you one thing. If I had tried to strangle David Goyer, you probably wouldn’t be talking to me now. A black guy with muscles strangling the director of a movie is going to jail, I guarantee you,” Snipes asserted.
