Sabrina Carpenter’s songs are great, so it’s not surprising that she takes inspiration from the great music of the past. The “Espresso” singer said an apocalyptic country song influenced her as a musician. She also became friends with one of the most important country crossover singers of all time.

Sabrina Carpenter loves this ‘heartbreaking’ love song

During a 2018 interview with Teen Vogue, the “Please Please Please” singer named the songs that defined her life. It included an eclectic mix of songs, including The Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon,” ABBA’s “Dancing Queen,” Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful,” Etta James’ “At Last,” and “Smooth by Santana and Rob Thomas. One of the most lovely songs on the list was Skeeter Davis’ “The End of the World,”  one of the most famous country songs of the 1960s. Davis’ tune is about someone who feels like the world is ending because she’s going through a breakup. While that sounds over-the-top, many people who went through breakups will be able to relate to Davis’ hyperbole.

Carpenter explained why she loves “The End of the World” so much. “When you’re growing and you’re feeling things for the first time and you’re figuring out who you are, it kind of, everything feels like the end of the world,” she said. “Every heartbreak, every emotion, it really does feel like the end of the world. And this was the song that she was like, why does everyone just live so happily when it’s obviously the end of the world because you don’t love me anymore? Isn’t it heartbreaking?” The tune’s clever lyrics are heartbreaking but Davis’ beautiful vocals really sell the track.

The song that kept Skeeter Davis’ ‘The End of the World’

“The End of the World” might be Davis’ most well-known track. According to The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits, “The End of the World” reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The track was kept off of the top spot by Ruby & the Romantics’ “Our Day Will Come.” The charts just aren’t fair.

Davis had the last laugh. “Our Day Will Come” is forgotten, while “The End of the World” remains a classic. The latter song was introduced to a new generation of hipsters when Patti Smith sang it over the closing credits of the Jennifer Lawrence movie Mother! That movie took the apocalypse metaphor from the original song in a much more literal direction. A cult classic like Mother! will keep “The End of the World” in the zeitgeist for years to come.

Sabrina Carpenter is friends with 1 of the biggest country singers ever

“The End of the World” isn’t the only country song that inspired Carpenter. During a 2023 interview with Grammy.com, the “Nonsense” singer discussed what it was like to work with Taylor Swift. “It’s a really surreal thing,” she said. “I covered one of her songs when I was nine years old and definitely, throughout my life, she was an artist and a songwriter and businesswoman who I’ve always admired. So to call her a friend and be a part of something as iconic as this tour, I still can’t process it.”

Carpenter is not a country singer but some country singers have had a massive impact on her music.
