Sabrina Carpenter Named the Rihanna Song That Changed Her Life
Sabrina Carpenter’s songs don’t sound too much like Rihanna‘s. However, the “Please Please Please” singer said one Rihanna track was a huge influence on her because of its rhythm. Interestingly, the tune in question appeared on what might be Rihanna’s most important album.
Sabrina Carpenter revealed why she looks up to Rihanna so much
During a 2018 interview with Teen Vogue, Carpenter named several songs that inspired her. One of the more recent tracks she mentioned was “Consideration” by Rihanna and SZA. “This actually really inspired my approach of writing my third album,” the “Nonsense” singer said. “It was the unstructured rhythm that I loved that just made it go a little bit like, oh, I wasn’t expecting that, which is kind of what Rihanna’s always done as an artist to me, which is why I look up to her so much.”
The “Espresso” singer made some jokes about Rihanna. “Also because she’s really tall, so I look up to her in general,” she said. “She’s always doing something that we never expect. That’s the best thing you can ask for in an artist.” Rihanna has made music in many genres, including rap, rock, pop, dubstep, EDM, reggae, dancehall, and soul music, so her albums are rarely predictable. Interestingly, Carpenter and Rihanna both made the transition from being teen stars to being provocative cultural forces.
How Sabrina Carpenter feels about writing her own songs
During a 2023 interview with Grammy.com, the former Disney star discussed her role as a songwriter. “I wrote my first song when I was 10 years old and it was very bad,” she remembered. “But it was always something that I loved doing.
“When I got a little older and to a place where I got people’s opinions, I was always made to feel like it wasn’t my place; like I should just listen to them, be sent songs and be happy with them,” she added. Carpenter said that she had no desire to sing songs with lyrics that didn’t feel authentic coming from her. Carpenter likes writing her own songs, and she often channels her struggles into her music. She feels blessed that she is in a position to write those songs.
How Rihanna’s ‘Consideration’ performed
“Consideration” was never a single and it did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. It reached No. 13 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart and spent four weeks on the chart. “Consideration” appeared on Anti, which is arguably the most critically acclaimed album of Rihanna’s career. Many of her previous records were regarded as collections of potential singles, while Anti was seen as a cohesive work of art. Many publications put it on their lists of the best albums of 2016.
Anti reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for two weeks, lasting on the Billboard 200 for 423 weeks. It produced massive singles like “Work,” “Needed Me,” and “Love on the Brain.” Anti remains the most popular album of Rihanna’s career in the United States, though it wouldn’t be too surprising if a jam-packed greatest hits record eventually overtook it.
“Consideration” wasn’t much of a hit but it had a major impact on Carpenter.
