Sabrina Carpenter has written dozens of songs. However, she said one piece of music told her life story. The track has a bit of a dark undercurrent. Interestingly, the tune is part of a genre that many casual fans associate with Justin Bieber.

Sabrina Carpenter’s life story is very different from a Disney movie

During a 2018 interview with Teen Vogue, Carpenter created a playlist of the tunes that defined her life. The playlist included classic tracks by The Carpenters, The Beatles, Christina Aguilera, ABBA, Etta James, Skeeter Davis, and Santana, as well as one of Carpenter’s own songs: “Almost Love.” Many artists have created playlists for Teen Vogue, but Carpenter broke the rules by including one of her own songs. That’s fine because the best artists break the rules and Carpenter gave fans a lot of insight into her life when she spoke about “Almost Love.”

“‘Almost Love’ for me is kind of my life story,” the “Espresso” singer said. “It’s these vignettes of relationships that never have the ending that you imagine or the perfect ending, which I think is not realistic.” Considering Carpenter has a past with Disney, it’s a big deal for her to doubt the concept of living happily ever after!

The tune should have sounded more like Ariana Grande

Carpenter revealed what she thought of “Almost Love” at the time. “Well, it’s my newest song, so I’m kind of creating new memories with it every day,” she said. “You relate to a song so much more after you’ve been singing it for years than you ever did the first second you wrote it because in that moment, everything’s just kinda flying and it feels like everything’s moving in ultra speed. But it’s not until you get to live with it for a bit that you digest it and you realize, ‘Oh wow, this is my life.'”

“Almost Love” is a good song but it wasn’t a very hip song when it came out in 2018. The tune has a tropical house vibe. That genre was huge when Justin Bieber was experimenting with it during his Purpose era, but by 2018, it was a little old hat. Perhaps the tune would have performed better on the charts if Carpenter rewrote it in a different genre. In 2018, the pop charts were dominated by hip-hop and R&B, so “Almost Love” might have been more successful if it had sounded like Ariana Grande.

How Sabrina Carpenter’s ‘Almost Love’ performed

“Almost Love” did not chart on the Billboard Hot 100. While Carpenter is an it girl, only four of her songs have charted in the United States so far. Those tunes are “Espresso,” “Nonsense,” “Feather,” and “Skin.” Given her talent, it’s easy to imagine that she will have many hits in the future.

“Almost Love” appeared on the album Singular: Act I. That album reached No. 103 on the Billboard 200 for a week. Frankly, that’s not very impressive. However, all major stars start somewhere.

“Almost Love” was not a hit in the U.S. when it first came out but fans might give the tune a second chance now that Carpenter is a major celebrity.
