The Sad Reason Why Meghan Markle Used to Enter Her Car Through the Trunk
Before Meghan, Duchess of Sussex met Prince Harry, she was a successful actress living in Toronto, Canada. Meghan was born in Los Angeles, California, which is where she and Harry call home today. Growing up in LA, and spending time around her father, inspired Meghan to break into acting.
The duchess might be worth millions now, but that wasn’t always the case.
Meghan Markle had a successful acting career prior to marrying Prince Harry
Before Harry met Meghan, she had established herself as a well-known Canadian celebrity. The duchess starred on the USA Network show Suits for seven seasons before leaving to become a working royal. The show filmed in Toronto, and Meghan had turned into quite the celebrity in the area during her run on the show.
When Meghan landed the role of paralegal Rachel Zane on Suits, she immediately had to move from LA to Toronto. It ended up being the downfall of her marriage; she’d tied the knot with producer Trevor Engelson only a few months before she moved. After her divorce, Meghan ended up dating a well-known Canadian chef before the two called it quits in just under two years. But those closed doors only paved the way for Meghan to meet her prince charming.
Meghan struggled as an actress before landing her role on ‘Suits’
Meghan had become well-known in the network television sphere upon becoming Rachel Zane. According to the Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand biography, “Finding Freedom,” Meghan was even charging upward of $10,000 for public appearances once her career took off. But getting there was not easy.
Meghan attended Northwestern University, as she had always prioritized education over acting. But upon graduating, she was ready to step back into the acting scene. She took small roles, some of which she isn’t proud of, and was quickly losing money upon not finding success. At one point, she only had $20 in her bank account.
She was once too poor to get her car fixed and had to enter through the trunk
Though Meghan was working hard to land acting roles, she wasn’t always satisfied with the roles she received. She once guest starred on the 90210 reboot, where she portrayed a high school student who was caught in a compromising situation in the car with a male friend. Meghan later landed a role on Deal or No Deal, where she was cast as Briefcase Model 24.
Meghan had to take any roles that would pay her bills. In the biography, Scobie wrote that the duchess had once fallen on such hard times that she couldn’t afford to fix the broken locks on her car. “She didn’t have enough money to fix [the car] when the automatic locks stopped working (and so spent five months entering through the trunk).”
Harry and Meghan recently purchased a $14.7 million Montecito estate
Meghan has come a long way since her car problems; she and Prince Harry, who are estimated to be worth a combined $30 million, recently purchased a $14.7 million mansion in Montecito, California, a suburb of Santa Barbara. The two were able to keep their purchase under wraps for a while; the news broke in August 2020, though the couple actually purchased the home back in June.
