SAG Awards 2022: Denzel Washington Could Top the Record He Previously Set

Washington earned his first SAG Awards nomination for 1999’s The Hurricane. However, it’s far from his last appearance at the award show. He earned nominations for Training Day, American Gangster, Flight, Fences, and Roman J. Israel, Esq. These nominations include individual and ensemble nominations. However, he did take home the best lead actor win for Fences.
The SAG Awards 2022 gives Washington his eighth nomination for his leading performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth. He plays the title character, Macbeth, alongside Frances McDormand’s Lady Macbeth. The story follows William Shakespeare’s legendary play, which also earned three Oscar nominations. Washington is in the running for the lead actor category at both ceremonies.
Denzel Washington’s ‘The Tragedy of Macbeth’ could top the record he previously set with ‘Fences’
The SAG Awards 2022 could allow Washington to break the record he previously set. He currently holds the record for the male actor with the most nominations in the Leading Actor category. Additionally, Washington’s win for 2017’s Fences ultimately made him the oldest winner in the ceremony’s history at 62 years old.
Washington was born on December 28, 1954, making him now 67 years old. As a result, a win for his performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth will allow for him to top his previous record as the oldest winner in the ceremony’s history. However, Anthony Hopkin’s nomination for The Father in the same category makes him the oldest nominee at 83 years old at the time.
Critics and audiences continue to admire Washington’s work. He produces phenomenal performances attached to intriguing projects that allow him to truly display his acting chops. Only time will tell if Washington will win at the SAG Awards 2022, or perhaps he could earn another nomination in the coming years.
SAG Awards 2022 predictions point toward other nominees
Washington has a chance of winning the Leading Actor category at the SAG Awards 2022. However, it’s unlikely. His fellow nominees include Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick…Boom!, and Will Smith for King Richard.
Some of the winner predictions vary between entertainment analysts. However, Smith has had awards season buzz all year long for his tremendous performance in King Richard. Garfield’s show-stopping performance as Jonathan Larson also has a significant chance of taking the win for Tick, Tick…Boom!
Critics praised Washington’s performance in The Tragedy of Macbeth. However, it hasn’t had quite the same staying power as Smith, Garfield, or even Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog. Washington and Bardem are unlikely winners, although bigger upsets have happened in the past.
