SAG Awards 2022 Mistakenly Ignored All Non-English Language Film Performances
The 2022 awards season is coming to an end within the next month. However, awards analysts generally look at the SAG Awards to inform their final predictions heading into the Oscars. This year’s award show has an assortment of phenomenal nominations, although it’s clearly missing something. The SAG Awards 2022 made a big mistake by ignoring all of the wonderful non-English language film performances of 2021.
SAG Awards 2022 has 5 film categories
The SAG Awards 2022 has a total of 5 film acting categories. However, the first category intends to recognize phenomenal ensemble performances. The first is Outstanding Performance By a Cast in a Motion Picture, including Belfast, CODA, Don’t Look Up, House of Gucci, and King Richard.
The Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role category includes a variety of performances. They include Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman for The Lost Daughter, Lady Gaga for House of Gucci, Jennifer Hudson for Respect, and Nicole Kidman for Being the Ricardos.
Next is the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role category. The nominations include Javier Bardem for Being the Ricardos, Benedict Cumberbatch for The Power of the Dog, Andrew Garfield for Tick, Tick…Boom!, Will Smith for King Richard, and Denzel Washington for The Tragedy of Macbeth.
Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role sees performances from some of the same films. They include Caitríona Balfe in Belfast, Cate Blanchett in Nightmare Alley, Ariana DeBose in West Side Story, Kirsten Dunst in The Power of the Dog, and Ruth Negga in Passing.
Finally, the last category is Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The nominations include Ben Affleck for The Tender Bar, Bradley Cooper for Licorice Pizza, Troy Kotsur for CODA, Jared Leto for House of Gucci, and Kodi Smit-McPhee for The Power of the Dog.
SAG Awards 2022 ignores all non-English language film performances, such as ‘Titane’ and ‘Drive My Car’
Unfortunately, the SAG Awards 2022 didn’t nominate a single performance from a non-English language film. This previous year hosted an assortment of extraordinary performances from foreign films that didn’t get any love at this year’s award show. However, Squid Game did manage to score 4 nominations across television categories.
Titane won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, but it hasn’t earned much love during the awards season in America. However, Agathe Rousselle delivers a powerful performance worthy of a nomination. Additionally, Titane‘s Vincent Lindon turns in a show-stopping, yet tender performance as a father willing to do anything to have his son back.
The Oscars 2022 nominated The Worst Person in the World for Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. However, the SAG Awards 2022 mistakenly didn’t nominate Renate Reinsve and Anders Danielsen Lie. They explore every corner of their characters, establishing heartrending and unforgettable performances that deserve recognition.
Parallel Mothers is another foreign film absent from the SAG Awards 2022 nominees. Penélope Cruz and Milena Smit are phenomenal in Pedro Almodóvar’s newest film. Fortunately, the Oscars 2022 didn’t make the same mistake regarding Cruz. However, the SAG Awards 2022 made a serious misstep here.
The road to Oscars 2022
The Oscars 2022 nominations aren’t perfect in their diversity, but they did a better job of honoring non-English language films this year. They also gave nominations to Japan’s Drive My Car. However, the SAG Awards 2022 didn’t bring a single non-English language film to its nominations.
Perhaps the SAG Awards, Oscars, and other future awards seasons will continue to expand their horizons. There’s a whole world of filmmaking that includes a wide variety of awe-inspiring performances. The SAG Awards 2022 has a narrow scope with only English-speaking roles. Hopefully, this will soon be a problem of the past.
The SAG Awards 2022 takes place on Feb. 27 at 5 p.m. PST.
