‘Sanditon’: We Just Got a Big Clue About When Season 2 Might Air
Can’t wait for Sanditon Season 2? You’ll need to be patient. We just got a hint about when new episodes of the period drama might air on PBS, and it sounds like anxious fans won’t get answers about what’s next for Charlotte (Rose Williams) before the end of this year.
‘Sanditon’ Season 2 will likely air in 2022
Sanditon got a surprise renewal earlier in 2021, more than a year after the first season aired on PBS in the U.S. and nearly two years after it premiered in the U.K. Production is currently underway on the new episodes. However, it will be some time before the show returns to the small screen, Masterpiece executive producer Susanne Simpson said during a panel discussion for All Creatures Great and Small at the summer 2021 TCA press tour.
Sanditon “will be with us next year,” Simpson said. “They’ve just started filming. They’re just about three weeks into filming now.”
Though she was not able to share an exact premiere date, Simpson did say more details about the show’s sophomore outing will likely be available this fall.
Bringing the Jane Austen drama back for another season was ‘complicated’
Fans are eager to see the continuation of Charlotte’s story, especially after the unsettled ending to season 1, which didn’t feature the happy ending many viewers were expecting. But reviving Sanditon was not easy.
“It was a complicated series to try and bring back,” PBS President and CEO Paula Kerger said during a TCA event on Aug. 10 (via Twitter).
“It took some work, but we’re looking forward to it being back,” she said (via Decider).
Expect some changes in the next season of ‘Sanditon’
When the show does return, fans should expect to see some changes. Chief among them will be the absence of Theo James, who played Charlotte’s love interest Sidney Parker. Shortly after the renewal was announced, James revealed he wouldn’t be back for season 2. In a statement released via Twitter, he said he felt his character’s journey had reached a natural conclusion.
“The broken fairytale-like ending between Charlotte and Sidney is different, unique, and so interesting to me,” the actor said. James is next set to star in the upcoming HBO series The Time Traveler’s Wife with Rose Leslie. Production is currently underway in New York, according to a report from News 12 Hudson Valley.
Also not confirmed to return for Sanditon Season 2 is Leo Suter, who played Sidney’s romantic rival Young Stringer. His name hasn’t been mentioned in any season 2 cast announcements.
Several new faces will join the Sanditon cast next season, including Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Tom Weston-Jones, who will play potential love interests for Charlotte. Rosie Graham, Alexander Vlahos, Frank Blake, and Maxim Ays will also appear as new characters in season 2. Returning cast members include Williams, Crystal Clarke, Kris Marshall, and Charlotte Spencer.
