Sandra Bullock Can’t Sing, but Her Parents and Her Daughter Can
Unlike some of her peers, Sandra Bullock doesn’t come from a family of actors. Instead, they come from a musical background. And while their daughter is obviously quite talented, that particular trait did not, apparently, pass down to the next generation.
The Academy Award-winning actor slogged through some musical training but never developed an aptitude or love for it. She skipped out on the chance to attend a prestigious arts college. She eventually did find her career in the arts. But as we all know, singing isn’t a part of it. For Bullock’s children, though, it’s a different story.
Sandra Bullock’s parents both sing
As part of Bullock’s promotional tour for her latest adventure flick The Lost City, she sat down with Wired for the Autocomplete Interview. It’s worth a watch, as she and co-star Channing Tatum clearly enjoy each other’s company. Following up on one of the questions, Bullock mentions that both of her parents were singers by trade.
While her father, John, spent time in the Army, his true lifelong profession was working as a voice teacher. Her mother, Helga, was a German opera singer. Students were in and out of their home, and Helga spent large amounts of her career taking her family to Germany to perform with her world-class voice. But their daughter didn’t take to this particular art form and instead found her calling in acting.
Sandra Bullock’s daughter can sing, too
When asked why she didn’t take to singing, the Blind Side star tends to simply say that this particular talent “skipped a generation.” Yahoo! reports that the singing bug skipped the actor’s sister, as well. Sibling Gesine Bullock-Prado found her calling as a pastry chef, where she has made a name for herself to the point that she makes regular TV appearances.
However, Bullock’s daughter Laila, who she adopted in 2015, does have vocal chops. “My daughter can sing beautifully,” Bullock said in the Wired interview. “She’s got pipes.” The actor and her youngest child appeared on Red Table Talk with Jada Pinkett Smith in 2020 in a rare appearance, as Bullock keeps her kids out of the limelight.
Bullock avoided going to an arts school when she had the chance
Bullock had one last shot at developing her musical skills, which she revealed in her Wired interview. When asked why she attended East-Carolina University, she pointed out that it was an attempt to avoid going to an arts school like her father. Why did this future Oscar-winner avoid going to a school that might’ve boosted her future career?
“I wasn’t ready, and I wasn’t talented enough yet,” she bluntly shared. In the end, she wrapped up her time at ECU with a BFA in drama, finally confident in her developing abilities on the stage and in front of the camera. Apparently, having some time to figure herself out was the right move. To say that her career has been a success would be an understatement.
