Before tying the knot in 2002, Gellar and Prinze worked together. They met as co-stars in the 1997 horror movie, I Know What You Did Last Summer.
When filming wrapped, they went their separate ways to work on other projects but stayed in touch. Only after being friends for a few years did they start dating.

Their first date wasn’t even supposed to be a date. According to a January 2020 Instagram post of Gellar’s, she and her now-husband planned on having dinner with a friend.
In the caption next to then-and-now photos, Gellar wrote, “20 years ago this week, my friend @realfreddieprinze and I were supposed to have dinner with a mutual friend from out of town. That friend missed her flight, but we decided to still meet and catch up.”
Gellar continued, saying she and Prinze still go to the same place.
“Now 20 years together, 17 plus married and two kids, we still go to that restaurant for dinner. So thank you @sloaney77 for not showing up for dinner,” Gellar wrote. In the years since their first date, both Gellar and Prinze have shared some details about it. For Prinze, he fell for Gellar when she didn’t steer clear of any food on the table.
As he described during a 2016 Facebook Live, at the time of his first date with Gellar he’d been on dates with other actors who weren’t as adventurous with their food ordering.
As a person with a big interest in food, he just couldn’t connect. Then Gellar came along and they bonded over their shared love of food.
“A lot of girls back then in Hollywood as far as the actresses, they didn’t eat, they ate salad,” Prinze said. “And I had gone on a date with a handful of them; they would never eat what I would eat. You have to have that in common with me if we’re going to get along.”
“Sarah came to dinner with me, and we sat down and she ate everything,” he added.
