Say What?! Miley Cyrus Says She and Emily Osment Didn’t Always Get Along Behind-The-Scenes of ‘Hannah Montana’

When we think of longstanding friendships that have come out of our favorite late 2000s-early 2010s Disney Channel shows, our minds instantly go to Miley Cyrus and Emily Osment.

The two starred together on the hit sitcom Hannah Montana from 2006-2011, and though they played best friends on-screen, it seemed to us that their relationship in real life closely related to that of their characters.

So you can imagine just how shocked we were to learn that Cyrus and Osment did not get along when the cameras stopped rolling.

Cyrus and Osment had the ideal friendship on-screen

There’s no denying that Hannah Montana’s Miley and Lilly had the type of friendship we all longed for.

Though the show was centered around Miley living a double life as an average schoolgirl by day and an international teen idol by night, it also followed her friendship with Lilly Truscott, who she became friends with soon after moving to Malibu.

Throughout the series, the dynamic duo would not only get into a plethora of crazy antics together but experienced some of their biggest milestones side by side.

While they played the ideal friends on-screen, there was a time when Cyrus and Osment were just as close as their characters in real life and would even gush about their friendship.

“When we first met, automatically she and I were really, really close. When we’re together we’re never quiet because there’s so much to talk about and there are so many stories,” Cyrus said of Osment to Seventeen in 2008. “Every day it’s something new for us. When you’re with someone all the time, it’s more than just she and I are friends, we’re sisters now.”

But just like most friends, Cyrus and Osment’s relationship was put to the test as the show grew in popularity.

Four years after Hannah Montana premiered on Disney Channel, Cyrus opened up about her friendship with Osment in her autobiography Miles To Go, alluding to a time when things were a little rocky between the pair.

“Emily and I tried to be friends, we really did, but it always ended in a fight,” she wrote. “Our characters got along so well, why couldn’t we act the same in real life?” she wrote.

Where does Cyrus and Osment’s friendship stand today?

Though Cyrus and Osment hit a rough patch in their friendship, the pair’s relationship seemingly improved as time went on.

In 2013, the co-stars appeared to have put whatever beef they’d previously had with one another aside and reconnected on Twitter since they apparently didn’t have each other’s phone numbers.

After that, the co-star’s remained in close contact and would often shout each other out on social media, proving to fans that their relationship was still going strong.

Then in March 2020, the actresses had the reunion fans had been waiting years for on Cyrus’ Instagram Live talk show Bright Minded: Live with Miley.

During the show, Cyrus and Osment served up some serious nostalgia while reminiscing about their favorite on-set memories together.

The reunion was just enough to prove to fans that the former co-stars are still great friends and will always have a special connection, no matter how many years have passed since their Hannah Montana days.
