‘Scream’ and ‘Friends’ Fans Freak Out Over Courteney Cox’s Short Bangs Pic On Instagram
Courteney Cox fans barely recognized the star in a recent Instagram post. The 56-year-old Friends alum is busy filming Scream 5 and promoted the film by showing off a retro hairstyle. Cox’s short bangs didn’t just delight fans of news reporter Gale Weathers — they also inspired some major reminiscing for Friends addicts. Remember when Monica Gellar sported a similar hairdo?
In general, Cox is doing a great job getting fans hyped for her upcoming projects. And it’s all thanks to a very intentional hairdo.
Courteney Cox showed off a new haircut just like she had in ‘Scream’
Wes Craven’s classic teen slasher flick Scream (1997) spurred an entire genre of copycat movies that’s still going strong. The story follows high school student Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who’s being terrorized by her mother’s killer in a small town. The murderer targets Sidney’s friends and kills them one by one. Gale Weathers (Cox) is the local news reporter intent on getting to the bottom of the mystery.
Gale is ambitious, bossy, and completely devoted to getting famous by solving the murder mystery. Cox plays the part perfectly. And she does it all with a blonde highlighted haircut and some long, wispy bangs.
The Scream sequels show Cox’s hair changing in dramatic ways. In Scream 2, Gale sports a stylish bob with red highlights after making it big with her book release. And in Scream 3, she resorts to ultra-short bangs instead. That’s the look she’s promoting on her Instagram post, too.

We have to assume the cut wasn’t permanent. But the Cougar Town star certainly got fans talking when she posted a selfie alongside someone wearing the iconic black and white Scream mask and wielding a pair of scissors. “Not the bangs!!!!!!!!” she wrote in the caption, referring to the person threatening to chop off her hair.
Fans were so supportive in the comments, equally laughing and cheering about the photo. It’s all part of promoting the upcoming and untitled Scream 5, which is scheduled to come out in 2022.
Monica Gellar got bad bangs on ‘Friends’ too
Scream fans weren’t the only ones loving the photo. Cox also wore baby bangs in the 90s when she starred on Friends.
In “The One with Ross’ New Girlfriend,” Phoebe cuts Monica’s hair into a terrible style when she thinks Monica wants to look like Dudley Moore. Meanwhile, Monica had asked to look like Demi Moore. The bangs really make the look.
And that’s not the only time Monica sports bangs on Friends. Over 10 seasons, her hair evolves through several iterations, from side swept bangs to a fringe style that looks quite similar to Gale Weathers in the first Scream movie.
Fans of Cox’s work from both the Friends and the Scream era surely appreciated the retro reference. And they’re probably excited for both the fifth installment of Scream and the upcoming Friends reunion special on HBO Max.
Especially if there are bangs involved.
