‘Scream’ Reboot Reunited Exes Courteney Cox and David Arquette for a ‘Cathartic Experience’
Courteney Cox and David Arquette were one of the most popular couples of the ’90s and 2000s. The two actors met on the set of the first Scream movie in 1996, married in 1999, and divorced in 2010. They have a teenage daughter named Coco. The couple were recently united in a Scream reboot and sat down with The New York Times to talk about the reunion. How they met
Cox and Arquette first met on the set of the 1996 horror film Scream, where they played love interests. The couple dated for a few years, and finally wed in San Francisco. Cox’s Friends costars were in attendance, including Jennifer Anniston and her then-husband Brad Pitt. On the groom’s side, his famous sister Patricia was in attendance along with her then-husband Nicholas Cage. The star-studded event was covered heavily in the media.
After five years of marriage, the couple welcomed their daughter Coco. Later, the couple began to experience problems and admitted that they had been attending couples’ therapy to work through it. Alas, the couple ended up separating in 2011 which eventually led to their divorce.
Arquette calls their recent collaboration ‘cathartic’
Cox and Arquette have been reunited through the franchise that initially brought them together. The couple has joined the Scream reboot and seems to be enjoying the experience. As reported by Insider, Arquette told The New York Times that “It’s a cathartic experience to just be able to act opposite Courteney. It’s been 25 years of our lives. We’ve grown up together. We have a child together.”
Cox was similarly pleased with the reunion. She said she had no apprehensions about it. She also added that “I was just so happy to be working with (Arquette and Campbell).” Cox also said that Arquette became tearful during their first scene together on set. “He got very emotional while he was filming it. He said the next day the crew didn’t look at him.”
The couple has been co-parenting their daughter Coco and has a good relationship now. In 2013, Arquette and journalist Christina McLarty met and fell in love. They tied the knot in 2015 and have two children together. Cox has been dating musician Johnny McDaid since 2013.
The premise of the reboot
The 2022 film is the fifth in the Scream franchise. Despite being labeled a reboot, the picture is a direct sequel to Scream 4 and the first in the series not directed by Wes Craven, who died in 2015. Cox and Arquette aren’t the only ones reprising their roles in the film. It will also feature Marley Shelton, Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, and Roger L. Jackson reprising their roles from previous installments of the film franchise.
According to the official synopsis of the film from Yahoo, twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. It will be interesting to see how the writers bring the new and old together onscreen.
Cox and Arquette have been a great example of how to successfully divorce and still care for each other for the sake of their daughter. As a general rule, divorces can get quite messy.
