‘Scream’ Spoilers: Who Is the Killer? The New Ghostface and Motives Revealed
Scream is one of the year’s most anticipated horror movies. 2022 sees the franchise return for the first time in a decade. Scream fans love seeing Ghostface stab and slash their victims while the viewers try to guess who the killer is. Paramount Pictures did a stellar job hiding its secrets in its marketing. For those who are dying to know, here’s a look at who is behind the iconic mask and costume this time around.
[Spoiler alert: This article contains spoilers from Scream.]
What is the new ‘Scream’ about?
Scream picks back up 25 years after the original carnage unleashed by a killer known as Ghostface. The quiet town of Woodsboro went into full panic mode after Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) and Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) started killing those around Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).
Now, a new killer is wearing the Ghostface mask and costume. Sidney, Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox), and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) haven’t spoken in years. However, they will have to help out if they hope to aid Sam (Melissa Barrera) and this new generation from the knife-wielding killer.
The Ghostface killer and motives are revealed
Scream tries to pull the audience in various directions over the course of its 114-minute runtime. Could the killer be one of the legacy characters? Or perhaps it’s one of the teenagers? Scream finally reveals its Ghostface killer in the final act, as per usual. This time, there are two killers that makeup Ghostface.
The first is Sam’s younger sister Tara’s (Jenna Ortega) girlfriend, Amber (Mikey Madison). The second killer is Sam’s boyfriend, Richie (Jack Quaid).
Amber and Richie admit that they already knew Sam’s secret that she’s actually Billy’s daughter. The two killers met on a Stab subreddit after passionately hating the latest sequel in the franchise. They wanted to use Sam’s paternal connection to launch a new killing spree to inspire another Stab movie because Hollywood has run out of fresh ideas for their favorite horror series.
However, Sam isn’t willing to go down without a fight. With Sidney and Gale’s help, she manages to kill both Amber and Richie. This time, they’re double-tapped to make sure that they don’t come back because horror rules dictate that they always do for one last scare.
‘Scream’ is a requel with a killer following new rules
Scream plays by many of the familiar rules from previous installments. However, it also adds a few of its own. Scream frequently calls itself a “requel,” which adds to the stakes. None of the characters are safe, including the legacy characters that have become so iconic for the franchise.
Scream makes it clear that it’s passing the torch to the next generation. The door is open for additional sequels, although they clearly have a new angle to work with. Sidney, Gale, and Dewey will always be the originals, but the Ghostface stories won’t always revolve around them. Sam has a future with potentially a whole lot more danger ahead of her.
Scream is now playing exclusively in theaters.
