Outlandish displays of love are more commonplace these days. Did you really ask for your partner’s hand in marriage if you didn’t employ a flash mob to help you? As much as the proposal economy has grown in the age of social media, the lengths celebrities go to will always be longer. One example: Seal and Heidi Klum, a surprising and beloved couple of the 2000s.

The “Kiss From a Rose” singer chose a unique if frigid way to propose to his then-girlfriend, and the duo built a life together. Unfortunately, they eventually split up. Now, their feelings toward each other are more complicated.

Seal pulled out all of the stops to propose to Heidi Klum

That moment when a couple decides to tie the knot will always live on in their memories, no matter what. But a little extravagance doesn’t hurt during moments like these. Klum told Marie Claire the story of how Seal proposed, which People recapped. It all began during a vacation getaway to the Canadian Rockies in 2004.

“[Seal] took me by helicopter,” the model explained. “He had an igloo built there, and they’d brought up everything: a bed with sheets inside the igloo, rose petals everywhere, candles. Very, very romantic!” The German model said the singer had arranged for champagne and food before dismissing the helicopter. They were completely alone. “It was hardcore. But I was ecstatic,” said Klum.

It’s funny to think about what would’ve happened if Klum said no in this incredibly isolated scenario, but her affection for her man was dialed in after their first meeting.

During a rare joint interview on Oprah Winfrey‘s Superstar Couples, she discussed the lustful initial encounter with her bicycle shorts-wearing future husband in a New York hotel lobby. “And I pretty much saw everything,” says Klum. “The whole package.” They got married in Mexico in 2005 and renewed their vows every year afterward.

Seal and Klum were a great couple, but nothing gold can stay

That initial passion lived on for a while as the pair settled into an upscale version of domestic bliss.

Seal took on the responsibility of raising Klum’s daughter Leni from her previous relationship with Formula One manager Flavio Briatore. The Fly Like an Eagle singer even officially adopted her in 2009. The couple also has three other children: two sons, Henry and Johan, and a daughter named Lou.

In public, Seal and Klum’s love seemed as strong as ever. They dressed up in ornate joint Halloween costumes and said nothing but the best things about each other in interviews. But long-term relationships can be difficult to maintain, even if you adore the other person.

In January 2012, Seal and Klum announced their separation in a joint statement, as Today reports:

“While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul-searching we have decided to separate. We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart.”

The divorce was finalized in 2014.

Divorce is an emotional ordeal for everyone involved. The remains of their split still sting for both of them. Seal did appear on an episode of America’s Got Talent in 2017. Klum referred to him as her “fave singer,” but that didn’t erase the bitterness from either side.

Klum has since remarried to her third husband, German guitarist Tom Kaulitz. Her praise for her new beau could be read as a shot at her ex. She said at a panel: “I’ve always said before it’s like I have a partner for the first time. If I have troubles or I’m trying to figure something out, he’s an amazing listener and it’s just amazing to have a partner. Before, when you figure things out on your own, it’s nice to do that with someone.”

Seal later expressed frustration when discussing the difficulties of co-parenting during an interview with Us Weekly. He explained that he shares Klum’s belief that his former partner wasn’t a team player in their marriage, and that his current relationship is more fulfilling.

Seal also doesn’t sound as excited about the concept of marriage, a sharp turn from the days when he made a song called “Wedding Day” with Klum providing backup vocals. Love: Sometimes it hurts.
