Sean “Diddy” Combs worked closely with the Notorious B.I.G. throughout the 1990s. Diddy initially signed him to Uptown Records and then brought him to Bad Boy Records when he founded it. Diddy also witnessed the drive-by shooting that killed Biggie. While the murder remains unsolved, he shared why he thinks someone killed the artist.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs said he thought the Notorious B.I.G. was killed because of jealousy

In 1997, Diddy and Biggie left a party. As they drove off separately, the driver of another car fired multiple bullets into Biggie’s car. Doctors pronounced him dead at the hospital. Diddy said he struggled to understand how this happened.

“I haven’t got over trying to understand how people could be so cold, so f***ed up,” he told Rolling Stone. “Biggie didn’t do nothing to nobody. I can officially say, B.I.G. didn’t do nothing to nobody. There are some people that, you know, reap what they sow or get what they deserve. He didn’t do nothing to nobody. Yeah, he had a temper. He got into fights. But nothing he should be killed for.”

He believed someone killed Biggie because they were jealous of his talent as an artist.

“It’s crazy to me still,” he said. “Nobody can tell me that just ’cause you a rapper, at the end of the day you get killed because you the flyest rapper? Motherf***ers are so jealous just ’cause you the best?”

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs admitted he had a hard time accepting the Notorious B.I.G.’s death

Much as he struggled to understand the motivation behind Biggie’s murder, Diddy said he struggled to accept the rapper’s death.

“[I]n order to keep my sanity, it’s like I don’t be living in a reality that he’s gone,” he said. “I be trying to block that out. Maybe I need a psychologist or something. I mean, I’ve cried a lot, and I deal with it, but it’s like the pain don’t get less. So that’s why I be running from the reality. ‘Cause if I sit there and look at the thing, it feels like the same time when the doctor came in and said that he was dead.”

He said he threw himself into his work in the aftermath of the murder.

“That’s why you’ve been seeing me moving around here faster than usual, ’cause it’s hard to really deal with,” he said. “It was like, you know, if I didn’t speak to him, it was like something was wrong with the day. I would think something happened to him if I didn’t speak to him.”

The rapper was reportedly planning to cut ties with Diddy

According to some sources, Biggie was making plans to move on from his partnership with Diddy. He was looking for a more lucrative deal with a different label.
