Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Shared Why He Didn’t Feel ‘Ready’ to Marry Kim Porter
In 2003, Sean “Diddy” Combs and Kim Porter reunited after several years apart. They had three children together over the course of their relationship, and Combs referred to her as his soulmate. Still, he said he didn’t feel ready to marry her, even three years into their reunion. He shared why he was unwilling to take that step.

In the years since their reconciliation, Porter and Combs welcomed twin daughters. He said she also taught him how to be a better partner.
“When you’re in a relationship, there’s a lot of give-and-take,” he told Essence in 2006. “Before I was just selfish.”
He didn’t feel that he had improved enough as a partner to marry Porter, though. Combs claimed he was waiting to propose to Porter because he wanted to be a better boyfriend first.
“I know she deserves to get married but I’m just not ready,” he said. “It’s not a reflection on how much I love Kim. It’s that I’m just learning how to be a good boyfriend. When I’m finished with this step, I’ll move on to the next.”

Not long after that interview, Porter and Combs broke up for good. She said his unwillingness to get married had nothing to do with why she wanted to move on.
“Do you know how many rings I have?” she joked in another Essence interview. “I don’t even have enough fingers (laughing). That’s not why I left.”
She said that if he were to propose, she would turn him down. She learned that he had a child with another woman, which confirmed to her that he was not ready to commit.
“I would say ‘No.’ And not because I don’t want to get married, but because he’s not ready to get married,” he said. “When I get married, I want to stay married. I want both parties to be on the same page at the same time, and to leave a certain type of behavior behind. That’s a commitment I don’t think he’s ready for.”
Porter shared why she decided to leave the relationship.
“I left because at this point in my life I want something different for myself,” she said. “I invested ten years, I have children, and I’ve always stood by him. But now it’s time for me and what I want to do for Kim.”
She said they were still able to get along after their breakup
While Porter was not happy with Combs at the end of their relationship, she said they were able to remain friendly after their breakup.
“You know how when two people go their separate ways, most of the time there’s animosity? It’s not like that with us,” she said. “Sean and I have this bond, this friendship. It’s not about ‘if you’re faithful to me, if I’m being faithful to you.’ We’re friends.”
She said that because they had three children together, they needed to stay cordial.
“I’m the person he can tell his innermost thoughts to and he’s that person for me. He still calls me every day and we talk,” she said. “There’s no ill feeling or ‘I can’t stand you, I hate you, don’t call.’ There’s none of that. We have three children together so that’s just not an option. We’re committed to our children even if we couldn’t commit to each other.”
