Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Once Shared He Regretted Not Marrying Kim Porter
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was in an off-and-on relationship with Kim Porter before their final break-up in 2007. But in hindsight, Diddy might’ve wondered how different things would be between them if they walked down the aisle .
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs ‘played himself’ when it came to Kim Porter
Diddy felt he and Porter weren’t just in a relationship. Additionally, he believed they were great friends as well, and friendship was something he didn’t think many couples had.
“A lot of times you just see, you know, everybody just getting married to get married, and getting divorced two years later, and they’re not really partners,” Diddy said in an interview with ET, labeling Porter his partner for life. “They’re not really friends. And you know my friendship with my girlfriend is something I take pride in.”
Even after their romance ended, the two remained friends on some level, showing the strength of their partnership. But a source once told People that just because they were friends didn’t make Porter’s death hurt any less for the music mogul.
“This is the most awful, sad and unreal situation for him. It’s a nightmare,” the source said. “He isn’t sleeping. He always had a very special relationship with Kim. Despite not being together romantically, he loved Kim. It was really true love, and he is hurting badly right now.”
But although Diddy took pride in their friendship, a comment he left on social media indicated he might’ve regretted never proposing to Porter. On his Instagram, a commenter reminded Diddy that he didn’t marry the late Porter back when she was still alive.
“I know. Played myself smh,” Diddy replied to the fan.
Diddy already felt Porter was marriage material, but he considered himself to be the problem. He thought he wasn’t ready to take their relationship to the next level. He had hope, however, that he’d get there one day.
“I know she deserves to get married,” he said. “But I’m just not ready. It’s not a reflection on how much I love Kim. It’s that I’m just learning how to be a good boyfriend. When I’m finished with this step, I’ll move on to the next.”
Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs was only a part-time father before Kim Porter’s death
As devastating as Porter’s death was for Diddy, it was also inspirational in a way. Speaking with Essence, Diddy recalled the prophetic last words he heard from his ex.
“She had the flu, and she sent the kids over to my house so they wouldn’t get sick. One night I was checking on her, and she was like, ‘Puffy, take care of my babies.’ She actually said that to me before she died,” he remembered.
Diddy took that advice to heart.
“Before this, I was a part-time father, you know? My family was always first, but there are countless times when I chose work over everything else. But every day I can hear her telling me to go and spend some time with the kids and make sure everybody’s all right, like she would do. I’m just a lot more present, and, most important, now my kids come before anything else in my life,” he said.
Diddy has four children with Porter, and three others from different partners. Still, his extensive family tree became closer in the aftermath of Porter’s death, which was a testament to her and Diddy’s bond.
“Kim was about love, and all of that care she gave to us every day, we just came together,” he said. “It really made ‘me proud that even though I didn’t get married, Kim and I, along with the other mothers of my children, raised a great family. We have a great family. The way we’re handling it is together. From Sarah [Chapman, Chance’s mom] to Misa [Hylton-Brim, Justin’s mother] to all of Kim’s friends, the grandparents—it takes a village. We’re doing really well because her passing has changed us and made us love each other more.”
