Sean Diddy Combs was caught in a bit of a love triangle back when he was dating Jennifer Lopez. The controversial music mogul still had feelings for his ex Kim Porter at the time, which further complicated his relationship with the singer. However, Diddy confided that a part of him might’ve been using Lopez to get back at the mother of his children.

What initially brought Diddy and the late Porter together in the first place was the same thing that helped split the couple apart. Out of all the high-profile celebrities the Bad Boys CEO dated in his life, Porter was his longest lover. He met Porter before his monumental success in the film industry, back when he was still working at Uptown records. Diddy worked at the label for three years before moving on to create his own music empire. While interning there, he caught his first glimpse of Porter, who was dating singer Al. B Sure at the time. She immediately left a lingering impression.

“I wasn’t trying to holler at her or anything, but I was admiring her—her lips, her eyes, her mouth, her shape, her energy—and thinking, ‘I wish I had a girl like that,’” Diddy once told Essence.

His wish soon came true, only Diddy didn’t have to settle for a girl like Porter. He dated the real thing on and off in the 90s and the 2000s. One of the traits that made Porter different from others Diddy dated was the model’s incredibly calm personality.

“She was smooth, you know, like ice. She’s cool and collected and thinks before she speaks. You meet a lot of young ladies, and they just don’t do that. Kim was never pressed; she was always in control,” Diddy said.

However, Diddy found Porter a bit too cool the deeper they got into their relationship. Because of that, and a variety of other reasons, Diddy gravitated towards Jennifer Lopez, who he famously dated between 1998 and 2001.

“I’m used to applause when I walk in the room,” he said. “And [Kim] was just too cool. I would tell her, `I guess I’ll go be with someone else who’ll take care of me the way I want to be taken care of, who’ll be a little more aggressive.’”

Since Porter “wasn’t really conforming to how I wanted her to conform,” Diddy pursued an alternative with Lopez. But when it came to dating the Anaconda star, Diddy clarified that he was simply “making a statement” to his ex.

Porter heard Diddy’s statement loud and clear at the time. But it seemed Diddy’s relationship with Lopez did little to affect Porter’s cool personality. Porter admitted that many people were concerned about her mental state at the height of Lopez’s fling with Diddy. But it turned out, Porter’s loved ones had little to worry about.

“Everywhere I went, people were asking, `Are you okay?’ I just hated that,” she said.

“People just believed everything they saw in print, and they were talking to me like I was really crushed,” Porter added. “But I had just had a baby. I couldn’t be somewhere in a corner heartbroken. I have kids. I’m a grown woman.”

What helped Porter keep her cool back then was the certainty Diddy and Lopez weren’t going to last.

“The world just saw the bright lights and the camera. But I knew what was really going on. He was still in love with me,” she said.

And she was right. Back then, even Diddy admitted that his ploy to lure Porter back in with Lopez didn’t work.

“Jennifer was my perfect match in terms of energy,” Diddy said. “I thought, ‘I’ll test the waters and hopefully Kim will see I’m serious and come running after me.’ So I was back at the house, trying to figure out what the hell was going on.”
