Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs Explained Why He Could Never Marry Jennifer Lopez
All eyes are on hip-hop mogul Sean “P. Diddy” Combs following the Homeland Security raids on two of his properties and video showing him hurting Casandra “Cassie” Ventura in a hotel hallway. Combs’ 10-year on-and-off relationship with Ventura is well-documented. But that’s not the only woman he seriously dated. Before Ventura, Combs dated Jennifer Lopez for fewer than two years. Here’s what he said about why he never wanted to marry her.

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs dated Jennifer Lopez from 1999 to 2001. The superstars met on the set of Lopez’s music video, “If You Had My Love,” and showed off their romance in September 1999 at the MTV Video Music Awards. Their romance didn’t last, and many celebrity followers know about the Shyne nightclub incident that ended in gunfire. Lopez was arrested and held in jail for 12 hours following the incident, as she and Combs sped off and tried to flee from cops in their Lincoln Navigator SUV.
Combs is known for having several high-profile relationships but never marrying his girlfriends. In 2001, he explained why he couldn’t marry Lopez.
“I got caught up in the hype a little bit,” Combs said at the time, according to a clip posted to YouTube. “Jennifer, she definitely a bad chick. But I was still in love with Kim, you know what I’m saying? I couldn’t marry Jennifer if I was still in love with Kim.”
Combs and model Kim Porter began dating in 1994, and they had two children together. Combs allegedly cheated on Porter with Lopez. Porter discussed learning of the incident.
“He just got caught up in the hype. And my man is Mr. Hype,” Porter told Essence, noting that Combs fell for “a big booty and a smile.”
“That relationship wasn’t real,” she continued. “The world just saw the bright lights and the camera. But I knew what was really going on. He was still in love with me.”

Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has openly admitted to cheating in relationships and not wanting to marry Jennifer Lopez. However, he reportedly tried to win Lopez back after their split. Former Bad Boy intern Damien Vasquez told Rolling Stone that Combs ordered his staff members to camp outside MTV’s TRL studios to try to win Lopez back using signs.
Lopez admitted to “going nuts” in her relationship with Combs, especially when she learned he wasn’t faithful to her. “I never caught him, but I just knew,” Lopez told Vibe Magazine, according to Entertainment Weekly. “He’d say he was going to a club for a couple of hours and then never come back that night.”
Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs said marriage is ‘a lot of responsibility’
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs has openly admitted to fearing the commitment that comes with marriage. Andy Cohen asked Combs on Watch What Happens Live why he never tied the knot.
“It’s the whole thing of, I think you have to be ready for it,” Combs said. “It’s somebody else’s heart involved. And that’s just a lot of responsibility. You know, I don’t want to be going to courts and having somebody interfere in my relationship, so I’d rather just do the Goldie Hawn. … But, I will give a contract. I will commit to a contract — a love contract. I’m talking about where there’s some money involved too. If there are any problems. You have to have an agreement.”
“I just don’t think I’m ready right now,” Combs concluded. “But I’m a great boyfriend.”
