Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs Once Told Jennifer Lopez That He Hated Her Song: ‘It’s Not a Hit’
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Jennifer Lopez go way back. The hip-hop mogul and the pop sensation met in the late ’90s and dated for two years before going their separate ways. Now, we’re looking back on when Lopez said Combs told her he hated a song she put on her first album. Here’s what he said about the song not being a “hit.”
Jennifer Lopez said Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs once told her that he hated her song
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs was known for his brutal honesty in the music industry. He and Jennifer Lopez dated from 1999 until 2001, and they stayed on good terms after their romance ended. Lopez looked up to Combs, as he was a massive success in the music industry. Unfortunately, he didn’t love every song that she created.
In 2012, Lopez talked about Combs on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. “I had a lot of mentors,” Lopez said before telling Jay Leno that Combs helped her immensely with her music. “When I first met him, I was making my first album, and he gave me a lot of insight into the music business,” she said, referring to Combs. “He had been in the music business a long time. So, he helped me a lot.”
Lopez then detailed how Combs told her the brutal truth regarding one of her songs. “It was for my first album — I was recording music, I was recording a song,” Lopez explained. “And I played it for him later after I did it. And I was like, ‘What do you think?’ And he was like, ‘Oh, you know, I hate it.’ He’s like, ‘It’s not good. It’s not a hit.’ And I was like, ‘Well, I love it,’ you know, standing up for my music and for myself.”
Combs had a funny response to Lopez’s love of the song. “He was like, ‘Good. You can listen to it in your living room. You’re the only one,'” she recalled, laughing.
Jennifer Lopez said she didn’t like Sean ‘P. Diddy’ Combs when they first met
Sean “P. Diddy” Combs and Jennifer Lopez famously dated, but she didn’t like him when they first met.
“He was larger than life, but at first, I didn’t like him at all,” Lopez said in an interview from 2001 posted to YouTube. ” … I thought he was, like, you know, ick. I didn’t like him because Sean and I were very different that way; I was very family-oriented and kind of the married type.”
However, once she and Combs spent time together, they developed a “bond” and an understanding of each other. “We both understood where we were at that time in our lives, and we both knew nobody else understood exactly how we felt,” she continued.
J.Lo is allegedly ‘disgusted’ by the allegations against the hip-hop mogul
Jennifer Lopez hasn’t publicly commented on the allegations against Sean “P. Diddy” Combs. Homeland Security raided two of his properties in early 2024, and he was arrested in September 2024 and charged with racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If found guilty, he possibly faces life behind bars.
An insider alleged that Lopez thinks of Combs as “very damaged,” especially after footage was released showing Combs attacking his ex-girlfriend, Casandra Ventura.
“What he has done and what he has been accused of is heartbreaking,” a source told DailyMail.com. “It is disgusting for her to see that someone, who at one point in her life was someone she put so much trust in, has ended up turning into a very damaged human being. It is disturbing to see.”
