Did Selena Gomez Really Date Justin Theroux? Why Her New Interview With Jennifer Aniston Suggests Otherwise
Actress Jennifer Aniston was married to actor Justin Theroux. A couple of years ago, many thought that Theroux was dating Selena Gomez after he and Aniston separated. But when Aniston hosted The Ellen DeGeneres Show on Jan. 24, 2020, she and Gomez revealed how close they are. Read on to learn why we don’t think the singer dated her friend’s ex.

You love to see two celebrities who haven’t worked together but still clearly care about one another. Gomez admits to being a huge Friends fan and, in her recent interview with Aniston, said when she first encountered the actress at a party years ago, “my heart stopped and I freaked out.”
Despite this, Gomez went on to become very famous, and the two have made it a tradition to take photos together at parties. They have a few from the 2014-2015 awards season — when Aniston was nominated for her role in Cake — that are so sweet (see above). But in between then and now, something happened…
Selena Gomez is rumored to have dated Justin Theroux
For some context, Theroux and Aniston announced their split in early 2018. The couple had been together since 2011, got engaged in 2012, and were married in 2015. Just a few months after their announcement, rumors that he was dating Gomez began to circulate.
At the time, Gomez was also fresh off her own breakup. She and on-again, off-again boyfriend Justin Bieber had been linked once again in 2017. But by May 2018, he was dating his future wife, Hailey Bieber. So the timing works out in support of this rumor.
Why we won’t think they really dated
But there’s no real evidence that they dated. They were spotted together once in May 2018, getting lunch with Paul Rudd, Gomez’s co-star from the 2016 film The Fundamentals of Caring. Rudd and Theroux are good friends and were spending quite a bit of time together that year with the release of their movie Mute.
What’s more, these three have all been acquainted for years. In fact, a third person was cute out of the previous photo — Rudd. And it’s not like Aniston wasn’t at these same parties with her then-fiancé. Not to mention, the Rare singer said months ago that she’s been single for two years.
What else did Aniston and Gomez talk about?
Ahead of the release of the episode (The Ellen DeGeneres Show typically tapes the day before or a couple of days in advance), Gomez was so excited to share that she’d been with Aniston. She shared numerous gushing videos in her Instagram Story, including one in which she’s wearing a Friends sweatshirt.
Of the hype surrounding the show, Gomez said, “What made me so happy is now people my age and everyone else is just obsessed. And it just makes me so happy for you and for the show because it’s iconic.” Aniston thanked the singer for her praise, calling her “a genuine fan.” Is that someone who would date your ex-husband? We think not.
