As a musician herself, Selena Gomez, who praised her pal Taylor Swift’s single “Lover,” sees both the old and the new in the title track. Read on for more kind words between the two, as well as the famous artist Gomez wants to have as her wedding singer.

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have been friends for a long time

This is a friendship that has stood the test of time. Gomez and Swift were first seen spending time together in the late ’00s. They were spotted at the premiere of Gomez’s film Another Cinderella Story in 2008. Around this time, Gomez dated Nick Jonas, while Swift was linked to his older brother, Joe Jonas.

While neither romantic relationship lasted very long, the two women formed a long-lasting bond. They’ve attended major events together, sitting side by side as they take turns winning (and losing) awards. Swift and Gomez have also performed together on various occasions, and the latter even appeared in the former’s video for her single “Bad Blood.”

Both have supported the other’s recent releases

What do true friends do? They support one another year in and year out, of course. Gomez and Swift have done just this, as evidenced by the many sweet moments they’ve shared, both publicly and via social media. Both released albums in the past year, and so, naturally, they were there for one another when they dropped.

When Swift’s Lover was released in August 2019, Gomez took to her Instagram Story, writing, “You’re just…unreal dude.” Swift replied simply, “I LOVE YOU SELENA.” Then, in January 2020, she returned the compliments. Swift called Gomez’s album Rare “stunning,” encouraging her fans to support her friend, who she deemed “beautiful soul.”

Gomez says Swift’s ‘Lover’ is reminiscent of ‘the Old Taylor’

Gomez curated a playlist for Apple Music, which she talked about in an At Home podcast with Beats1’s Zane Lowe. Included on her playlist was “Lover.” She called her BFF “one of the greatest songwriters,” and explained why she chose this particular track.

“There’s nothing really to say other than this is another song that shows her ability to take it back to the old Taylor, and to also combine it with her challenging [herself] to do new things with her music,” said Gomez. “Even her [October 2019] SNL performance, that’s Taylor, there’s nothing else.”

She has a lot of other musical inspirations

The interview revealed many more of Gomez’s musical inspirations, from rock legends to rappers to the newest names in pop. Speaking of the first, she included Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” on her playlist, saying, “I think I know all of their songs.”

Lowe asked her if she’s met frontwoman Stevie Nicks, to which she replied she hadn’t. However, she hopes to someday, even citing Nicks as someone she’d like to have sing at her future nuptials. While Gomez’s only current “Boyfriend” is her song by that name, here’s to hoping she finds someone who agrees with her choice in wedding performer.
