Selena Gomez Reflects on Her Biggest ‘Beauty Disaster’: ‘My First Thought Was I Have to Get out of Here’
Selena Gomez is one of the biggest stars of the social media age. After becoming a child star, Gomez was able to transition into a successful music career, all while steadily building a strong core fanbase. Over the past several years, Gomez has been able to grow her brand even bigger, launching a brand-new cosmetics line and regularly speaking out about the importance of mental health services. Gomez’s rise to fame hasn’t always been smooth, and she’s been in the headlines multiple times for her supposed fashion and makeup “fails.” In a recent interview, Selena Gomez opened up about what she considers to be her biggest beauty “disaster.”
What did Selena Gomez say about her biggest beauty disaster?
In 2018, Selena Gomez stepped out at the Met Gala rocking a very unique beauty look. Gomez wore a stunning white gown designed by Stuart Vevers Coach, complemented by glittery eyeshadow.
However, the biggest standout to her look was her tan, which looked dark orange in many photos. After photos from the event went viral, Gomez’s look received a lot of flak from critics, with many slamming the way her tan looked. In a recent interview with Glamour UK, Gomez opened up about the beauty “disaster” of a look.
As reported by People magazine, Gomez said ,”While I was getting ready for the Met Gala a few years ago, we put on a bit of tanning lotion and it looked beautiful.” Gomez described how as the night went on, her tan kept getting darker and darker.
“When I sat down, I saw a photo of myself, and it looked completely orange,” she explained. “And here I am at this prestigious event — my first thought was — ‘I have to get out of here!'”
What did Selena Gomez post on Instagram when her beauty disaster first occurred?
Selena Gomez has a unique perspective on her too-orange tan these days. But even in the hours following the event, the music mogul displayed a sense of humor about it all. The day after the Met Gala, Gomez took to Instagram to post a video clip of herself running through a garage. “Me when I saw my pictures from MET,” Gomez captioned the clip. She was clearly referencing the photos of herself at the Met, and was in on the joke about the way that her tan looked in some of the photos.
Gomez also opened up about no longer feeling the pressure to be perfect
Also in her interview with Glamour UK, Gomez talked about the pressures of being in the spotlight, and how fans and critics always expect her to look a certain way. On unrealistic beauty standards, Gomez said, “From the time I can remember, I’ve always felt like I had to be perfect or look a certain way. It took me a long time to realize that I only wanted to be myself — that what made me unique was also what made me beautiful.”
These days, Gomez focuses on small everyday acts in order to improve her mental health and increase self-love. She explained that she’s a big advocate for therapy and regularly leaves sticky notes around her house with positive affirmations. Finding these notes throughout the day helps Gomez to be reminded of things she loves about herself.
Although it hasn’t always been easy, and there have been a lot of stumbling blocks along the way, the actress, singer, and cooking-show host recently revealed that she’s the “most herself” that she’s ever been, and even more excited about her numerous projects.
