In 2021, Selena Gomez released Revelación, her first Spanish-language EP. More than a decade in the making, the record performed well for the singer. However, some fans can’t believe Gomez is done promoting it a month after its debut. Is the era over?

Gomez began acting as a child. However, after moving to Los Angeles to star in the Disney Channel series Wizards of Waverly Place, she broke out as an actor. Along with fellow teen idols like Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, Gomez began a music career via Disney’s Hollywood Records.

The singer released three albums back-to-back-to-back with her band Selena Gomez & the Scene: Kiss & Tell in 2009, A Year Without Rain in 2010, and When the Sun Goes Down in 2011. Gomez then put out her first album as a solo artist, Stars Dance, in 2013, before signing with Interscope Records.

‘Revelación’ arrived after years of talking about a Spanish-language project

While many artists consistently release an album every couple of years or so, Gomez took her time with her releases. She considers 2015’s Revival to be her first true album due to finally having the freedom she longed for at Disney. Then, following 2020’s Rare, she focused on a project she’s been talking about for a long time.

Back in her Disney days, the third-generation Mexican-American artist teased a “Spanish record,” telling fans “it’s sounding so cool.” A decade later, she announced the EP in question, Revelación, quote-tweeting herself and adding, “I think it will be worth the wait.”

“This has been something I’ve wanted to do for 10 years, working on a Spanish project, because I’m so, so proud of my heritage, and just genuinely felt like I wanted this to happen,” Gomez told Zane Lowe for Apple Music. “I feel like it’s the perfect timing. Just with all the division in the world, there’s something about Latin music that globally just makes people feel things.”

Gomez’s fans (and collaborators) don’t want her to retire

Ahead of Rare’s release, Gomez told Vogue, “It’s hard to keep doing music when people don’t necessarily take you seriously,” She continued, “I’ve had moments where I’ve been like, ‘What’s the point? Why do I keep doing this?'” Gomez added, “I think the next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire [from] music.”

Understandably, this comment caused an uproar from her fans (known as Selenators). Ever her “Taki Taki” collaborator, Cardi B, chimed in. “I don’t think Selena should retire,” tweeted the rapper. “She makes good music & her fans love her. I think she needs one more Era. [An] edgy one that no one [has] ever seen her as. I would love to give her some ideas.”

Is Gomez planning a ‘Revelación’ tour?

Gomez released three singles off Revelación: “De Una Vez,” “Baila Conmigo,” and “Selfish Love.” But fans wanted more. “I am quite disappointed to see the Revelación era over,” wrote one on Twitter. “the EP is awesome and has so much potential. Selena said herself that she always wanted to do a Spanish project. Too bad we don’t have more interviews, a performance or even a new single.”

Though Gomez may be done promoting the EP, she knows what she wants to do next: A tour. And she knows just where to begin. “South America’s where I would start, because we missed it last time, and because that’s where my heart is,” she told the Los Angeles Times.
