‘Shadow and Bone’: 6 Shows to Watch if You Love the Netflix Fantasy Series
Shadow and Bone has debuted on Netflix to rave reviews. The thrilling series is a blend of fantasy, magic, and mystery. Set in the Kingdom of Ravka which is divided by a diabolical force called The Fold, the show is an epic tale about self-discovery, adventure, and fighting against evil.
The series is bold and feminist, and already, fans are begging Netflix to renew the series for a second season. If you’ve already zipped through season 1 of Shadow and Bone, here are several other TV shows that will give you a similar vibe.
What is ‘Shadow and Bone’ about?
Based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), an outcast and an orphan who has always been looked down upon because of her heritage.
Amid a journey she takes to be near her best friend, Malyen “Mal” Oretsev (Archie Renaux), a soldier, Alina uncovers a power she didn’t know she had that could free the country from the chokehold of The Fold.
However, General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), the leader of the Grisha people, might have other plans for Alina.
‘Game of Thrones’
If you’ve never watched Game of Thrones, now is the time to dive in before the series prequel, House of the Dragon debuts on HBO in 2022. Set in the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, the epic drama series follows several powerful families as they battle using violence and magic for control and a seat on The Iron Throne.
While the Kingdom of Ravka has the Fold, Game of Thrones has the Long Night, the Night King, White Walkers, and wights.
‘The Irregulars’
Netflix’s The Irregulars only ran for one season. However, the series will give you the same vibe as the Crows’ Ketterman on Shadow and Bone. The show follows a group of teenagers living on the streets who all work as “The Irregulars” to help Dr. Watson (Royce Pierreson) solve supernatural crimes. However, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Lloyd-Hughes) gets all of the credit for their hard work.
‘The Witcher’
Alina doesn’t set out to hunt monsters in Shadow and Bone, but she is the key to eradicating The Fold and the monsters called volcra, who feed on human flesh and live within it. Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books of the same name, The Witcher follows witcher Geralt (Henry Cavill), a mutated monster hunter who is an outcast in society.
‘His Dark Materials’
Based on Philip Pullman’s trilogy, His Dark Materials is set in an alternative magical universe. The show follows Lyra, a young girl on a quest to find a kidnapped friend. In the process, she uncovers a sinister plot and bridges two worlds together.
‘Fate: The Winx Saga’
Shadow and Bone chronicled Alina trying to uncover her magical powers. In Fate: The Winx Saga, the series centers on several young women at a magical boarding school in the Otherworld trying to master their magical powers.
