Shailene Woodley Eats Clay; ‘I’ll Definitely Try Almost Everything’
Having traveled and lived all over the world, Shailene Woodley has certainly developed an adventurous spirit. The Divergent star loves learning about other cultures and infusing their customs into her professional and personal life. And Woodley’s sense of adventure has certainly extended to her food preferences. Over the years, Woodley has adopted a truly unique diet.
Shailene Woodley brings her own food to set
As an actor, Woodley is on set a lot. And while craft services ensures that there is always tons of food on set for Woodley and her fellow actors, the Endings, Beginnings actor typically prefers to bring her own food from home. This way she knows exactly what’s going into her body. And unlike other celebrities who might eat a ton of takeout, Woodley actually seems to love eating leftovers.
“I bring my own food in the morning and at night,” Woodley shared with Bon Appétit back in 2015. “I go to work, then I come home and learn my lines, and then I’ll make dinner and use whatever I make for dinner as leftovers the next day. It usually has potatoes or sweet potatoes, a protein, and a vegetable. It’s an easy, quick thing to do every day, and then you can switch up the sauces depending on what you’re feeling like.”
Woodley also enjoys a lot of fermented foods. Kimchi, kombucha, and sauerkraut are staples in her diet. The Divergent alum admits that she really loves a “semi-rotten” flavor. But perhaps one of the most unusual parts of Woodley’s diet isn’t technically a food.
Why clay is a staple in the ‘Divergent’ alum’s diet
The actor likes to consume clay on a regular basis and swears by its health benefits.
“(Clay) is one of the best things you can put in your body,” Woodley shared with Into the Gloss. “One of my friends was making a clay toothpaste that you swallow instead of spit out. But I first heard about the benefits of eating clay from a taxi driver. He was African and was saying that, where he’s from, the women eat clay when they’re pregnant. Seriously — ask your taxi drivers where they are from and about their customs. You will learn a lot.
“So, I’ve discovered that clay is great for you because your body doesn’t absorb it, and it apparently provides a negative charge, so it bonds to negative isotopes. And, this is crazy: it also helps clean heavy metals out of your body.”
Woodley is willing to try almost any food
While eating clay might seem odd to some, Woodley shared that she doesn’t shy away from trying new foods. In fact, she even tried pig’s feet and ended up loving it.
“I’ll definitely try almost everything,” the Big Little Lies actor told Bon Appétit. “I was in Spain recently and there’s a Catalan dish that’s cooked with pigs feet. I ended up really loving it. It was so gelatinous, and that felt so healthy for my stomach. It was good to have so much gelatin in there.”
Woodley may be more adventurous than most when it comes to her diet, but at least she can say she’s not missing out on anything.
