Shailene Woodley Vehemently Defended Miley Cyrus
Though most people don’t think of her as one, Shailene Woodley was a child actor. The Big Little Lies star began pursuing a career in acting when she was only 5 years old. Impressively, Woodley has been able to have a career with longevity and has worked alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names.
Though Woodley has received some criticism for her “hippy” lifestyle, her career hasn’t been marked by “scandal” or negative press. But that hasn’t stopped the Divergent star from defending her peers a time or two. Once, Woodley got very vocal in defense of Miley Cyrus.
Miley Cyrus received a lot of criticism after her tenure on the Disney Channel
As most people know, Cyrus rose to fame thanks to her hit Disney Channel show, Hannah Montana. However, when her tenure at Disney finished, she made lots of waves. Many people criticized Cyrus’ clothing, penchant for singing about drugs and alcohol, twerking, and overall behavior.
People were quick to claim that Cyrus was setting a bad example for their kids. However, in an interview with Vanity Fair, Woodley was quick to jump to Cyrus’ defense. The Endings, Beginnings star argued that the “Malibu” singer was “just being Miley”.
Shailene Woodley stood up for the ‘Hannah Montana’ alum in an interview
“Miley isn’t rude or mean or cruel to anyone in her actions,” Woodley argued. “She just does herself. And regardless of whether you agree with what she’s doing or not, it’s none of your business what she does. She’s not in the world doing mean things. Why are all these parents or all these people freaking out about Miley being herself? If you don’t want your kids to watch it, you know, you can change that situation at home, but don’t make a big deal of what she’s doing. Make a big deal about the bullies at school who are beating kids up.”
Of course Woodley is hardly the only star to speak positively about Cyrus. Taylor Swift, who worked with Miley in Hannah Montana: The Movie, also had some nice things to say about the “Angels Like You” singer earlier on in her career.
Taylor Swift also spoke kindly of Cyrus years before Woodley did
“Miley is pretty much the same person off camera that you see on camera,” Swift stated about Cyrus in an interview. “She is so just, outgoing, and everything is big and huge and awesome. And she’s just such a positive person, you know, and she’s just not reserved. She doesn’t hold anything back, which is one of my favorite things about her.”
Woodley and Swift certainly understand what it’s like to be in the public eye under intense scrutiny. And while we’d be interested in hearing what, if anything, they have to say about Cyrus now, clearly they were all for singing her praises a while back.
