Shailene Woodley Has Walked the Red Carpet Barefoot Multiple Times
Over the years, Shailene Woodley has earned a reputation for her unique lifestyle. From her interests in herbalism to her passion for the environment, Woodley manages to subvert expectations for that of a famous actor. Once, the Big Little Lies star even lived in a remote cabin without cell service. And Woodley’s “hippy” ways sometimes extend to her work obligations also. She’s even walked red carpets barefoot throughout the years.
Back in 2013, Woodley was attending the premiere of her film The Spectacular Now. While there, the actor experienced a wardrobe snafu and her high-heels snapped. Rather than get upset, Woodley chose to embrace the malfunction. In fact, she seemed pretty stoked to be able to be footloose and fancy-free.

“Am I the first person to ever do that?” Variety reported Woodley said. “Does that mean I get to be barefoot for the rest of the night? This is such good news.” That same evening, she expressed similar sentiments to OMG! “I’m so freaking stoked,” Woodley boasted about her heel snapping. “Now I have to go barefoot.”
Continuing on, Woodley proclaimed that people probably would assume going barefoot was her plan all along. “You witnessed it!” Woodley declared. “So when people are like ‘Shai’s such a hippie, she does the red carpet without shoes, how disrespectful,’ you can be like, ‘She broke her heels and her shoes!'”

While going barefoot may not have been intentional, many seemed to think it was on-brand for Woodley. Miles Teller (Woodley’s co-star on The Spectacular Now) certainly thought so. “Shai would be going barefoot whether her shoes snapped or not,” Teller shared in the aforementioned interview.
Turns out Teller was right. A year later, Woodley was barefoot at the red carpet premiere of Divergent. She’s also been spotted on the streets of New York sans shoes. But bare feet on the red carpet may be as far as Woodley is willing to go to shirk tradition. In an interview with Into The Gloss, she explained her reasoning for generally sticking with the program.
Why Woodley won’t show up to premieres or award shows without makeup
“I will get my makeup done for appearances and events,” Woodley stated. “For me, to show up to something like Live with Kelly and Michael with Converse on and no makeup would be disrespectful. They’re dressed up; it’s their territory. I think there is something to be said about switching up old paradigms, but you have to turn the wheels slowly.”
Continuing on, Woodley explained that there’s a compromise to be had. “You have to pick and choose where you are going to represent you and the things you keep sacred, and then there are the things you have to do for the public, for Kelly and Michael, and for the Oscars,” she added. “I respect the establishment, but I don’t sacrifice my own integrity. I wouldn’t wear fake eyelashes or crazy extensions. It’s always me—just maybe the public, pretty-in-a-Cinderella-dress me.”
Clearly, Woodley has a personal ethos for attending high-profile events. But we wouldn’t rule out her turning up barefoot again on the red carpet.
