Shailene Woodley & Zoe Kravitz Played Besties In This Movie Long Before ‘Big Little Lies’
We’re nearly halfway through the second and arguably last season of Big Little Lies. The hit HBO drama features the best ensemble cast on television. Chock full of drama, unexpected humor, and compelling discourse surrounding motherhood, abuse, sexual assault, and marriage, it’s a show we never want to end. Two stars of the hit show are Shailene Woodley and Zoe Kravitz, who play the roles of Jane Chapman and Bonnie Carlson respectively. Both give fantastic performances and add a layer of depth and rawness to the show. But, this is far from the first time the famous pair have worked together. In fact, the two actresses played best friends in three films long before working together on Big Little Lies.
Divergent movies
Years before Big Little Lies dominated your Sunday nights, Woodley and Kravitz played besties in the film Divergent. Based on a book with the same name by author, Veronica Roth, the film follows Beatrice “Tris” Prior (played by Woodley) as she navigates a post-apocalyptic Chicago. As Tris leaves home and struggles with her identity, she befriends Christina (played by Kravitz) and the pair help each other through numerous near-death experiences. The film was wildly popular and both Woodley and Kravitz reprised their roles in the film’s subsequent sequels, Insurgent and Allegiant.
Real life friends
The actresses might play great friends on screen, but are they friends in real life? The answer to that is a resounding yes. Having gotten along so well in the past, the pair was thrilled to learn that they’d be working together again on Big Little Lies. In an interview, Kravitz shared how she reacted when she found out that Woodley was also cast in the project. “Shailene and I called each other, we were like, “Oh my God, again!” It was great – Shailene and I… We are obvious soulmates and the universe agrees because we keep on getting put together, which is fantastic” the Mad Max: Fury Road actress declared.
Fame, films, and a wedding
Kravitz has also shared how refreshing it is to have a friend who remains so consistent in her persona no matter what level of success and fame she accrues. “I’ve known Shai for years now, and with all the ups and downs—life stuff, fame, films, love—she’s just constantly herself. So many people change depending on their environment, and Shailene Woodley does not, and I fucking love it. Life is Shailene Woodley’s bit*h” the musician admitted. Woodley has also shown her love and appreciation for Kravitz, Most recently, The Fault in Our Stars actress attended Kravitz wedding in Paris.
Big Little Lies and beyond
It’s great that these long-time friends have had the opportunity to work together again. Though we can admit that this season of Big Little Lies is going by quicker than we’d like, we are impressed by the tremendous amount of talent that both Woodley and Kravitz portray. We can’t wait to see what the rest of the season brings for their characters, and we hope they are paired together on other projects in the future.
