Shay Mitchell Loves Not Being Married to Her Boyfriend; ‘Keeps it Sexy’
Though Shay Mitchell and her boyfriend, Matte Babel, have been together since 2017, the pair have no immediate plans to get married. The pair, who generally keep their relationship pretty quiet, live together in Los Angeles and share an adorable daughter, Atlas, together. And while the couple is head over heels for each other and possibly considering baby number two, wedding bells don’t seem to be ringing for the pair.
Mitchell has never made it a secret that she never really felt connected to the idea of getting married. Even before she and her boyfriend had a child together, they began having conversations about the future of their relationship. Back in June of 2020, Mitchell shared that while she absolutely loves weddings, having one of her own simply wasn’t on her mind.

“A lot of people ask, it’s never been something I really cared for,” Mitchell revealed to ET Online. when asked if she and Babel were planning on tying the knot. “And I love weddings, love weddings. I can watch them all day long. I love attending, I love being a part of my friends’ [weddings], anybody’s to be quite honest. It’s just not something I care for for myself and it’s something that Matte and I have spoken about.”
Continuing on, Mitchell revealed that her boyfriend continued to check in with her to make sure her feelings about getting married haven’t changed. “He’s been like, ‘You sure?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, we work so well right now,'” Mitchell shared about her boyfriend. “It’s great and this dynamic just works for us. It may not always be the ‘correct’ way but it works. That’s how I sort of have to go, you know, that’s how I do it.”

Now, a year later, Mitchell seems to be doubling down. She admits that her way of life may be “non-traditional”, but it really works for her and Babel and she doesn’t see herself getting married anytime soon. “I don’t know if I’ve done anything in order,” the You actor shared with E! News. “I didn’t get married before a child. I had a child, didn’t get married. I don’t really know if that’s in the cards of us. I think we both agree, maybe it’s just me.”

Continuing on, the Pretty Little Liars alum shared that she thinks it’s sexy that she and Babel haven’t gotten married. “There’s no pressure here,” she shared about her relationship with her boyfriend. “I love it. I love the fact that we come home and every day I’m like, ‘I choose you and you choose me.’ It keeps us on our toes. I’m like, ‘Hey, I can walk out. I don’t need to go through a lawyer, I can just walk out.’ And same with him. It keeps it sexy.”
Clearly, Babel and Mitchell have a dynamic that works for them. And while some people may not understand or agree with their decision not to marry, ultimately it seems like they have a happy and healthy family, which is what matters most.
