‘Shining Girls’ trailer promises a mind-bending series with many twists and turns
The trailer teases a local murder that appears to be directly connected to Kirby’s assault six years prior. Together with veteran reporter Dan Velazquez (Moura), Kirby works to find the man responsible for her attack. But that proves problematic. As she mentions in the trailer, “nobody knows him.”
“He’s everybody, he’s nobody, he’s all the time,” Kirby says, alluding to her attacker’s ability to defy time and space. As if that weren’t confusing enough, elements of Kirby’s life change, too. One minute, she has a pet cat, the next, it’s a dog. Kirby has an unnerving sense she has known her attacker all her life, and the more she tries to find this man, the clearer it becomes he’s been killing women in the same way for decades.
Can Kirby hold on to reality despite her ever-changing present and confront her past? Find out beginning April 29.

Lauren Beukes’ book ‘The Shining Girls’ inspired the Apple TV+ series
Author Lauren Beukes’ book The Shining Girls was first published in 2013. According to the book summary: “Harper Curtis is a killer who stepped out of the past. Kirby Mazrachi is the girl who was never meant to have a future. Kirby is the last shining girl, one of the bright young women, burning with potential, whose lives Harper is destined to snuff out after he stumbles on a House in Depression-era Chicago that opens on to other times.”
The description continues: “At the urging of the House, Harper inserts himself into the lives of these shining girls, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. He’s the ultimate hunter, vanishing without a trace into another time after each murder — until one of his victims survives.”
In the book, Kirby works with Chicago Sun-Times reporter Dan Velasquez and finds herself “closing in on an impossible truth.” The Apple TV+ series appears to follow Beukes’ book closely.
