Signs Suggest ‘A Quiet Place: Part 2’ May Not Be What Fans Are Hoping For
A Quiet Place — directed by and starring John Krasinksi and Emily Blunt — was one of the most talked-about thrillers of 2018. The concept was simple: if they hear you, they hunt you. The execution was pristine, as parents yearning for a way to fight back (and protect their children) were forced to keep silent — remain undetected while on the run — in a do or die fight against a monster one notch above humans on the food chain.
A Quiet Place currently boasts a 95% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it an exception in a genre often drowning in cheap scare tactics and narrative tropes. Thus, it should come as no surprise that a sequel got the green light. However, based on the ending of the first movie, fans were hoping for one major difference come round two. Yet, signs suggest — relying on a recently released trailer — that an expectation violation may be on the horizon.
How ‘A Quiet Place’ set up the sequel (spoiler warning for the first movie)
Throughout A Quiet Place, fans watched a family of four (with a newborn on the way) struggle to survive against ruthless, yet quite intelligent beasts. Without a way to fight, they remained in flight mode for the duration of the film — hiding without taking a breath and attempting to walk without making a peep. While the father, sacrificing his life to save his children, died in the end, the family also discovered a way to fight back.
The final scene features Evelyn Abbott cocking a gun with a smirk on her face, acknowledging that now, it’s going to be a battle — a fight situation, as opposed to a flee situation. While A Quiet Place operated largely as a dramatic thriller — with bits of shock horror intertwined — the final scene created an expectation for a follow-up action thriller (of course, still boasting horror sequences to align with the genre at hand). However, will the next movie feature the family combatting the beasts in a life or death battle, or will the family still be on the run — fleeing from the monsters they now know how to combat?
What to expect based on the ‘A Quiet Place: Part 2’ trailer
As We Got This Covered (WGTC) notes, the trailer for A Quiet Place: Part 2 “sees everyone on the run” once again. While it looks like the family takes a stand when forced, the movie may, once again, operate from a flee mentality.
Considering the beasts are more powerful — even with the hearing aid monster-slaying device — this should come as no surprise. However, you would think the family would walk around prepped to fight, with a battery-powered speaker ready to power on when need be. Hopefully, the second film features the family in combat more often than not, as it’s time the humans reclaim their right to the throne. However, based on the trailer, this family may be running in silence once more.
