‘Ugly Betty’ alum Michael Urie is in ‘Single All the Way’

Throughout November and December 2021, Netflix offers a special holiday slate that includes five rom-coms, a horror adventure, eight kids’ titles, four comedies, and a few themed competition shows. But Michael Urie is already charming fans thanks to the newly-released trailer for Single All the Way.

The Ugly Betty alum stars opposite Philemon Chambers and Luke MacFarlane, with Coolidge and Najimy on deck as his character’s aunt and mother. According to Netflix’s synopsis, the film centers on Peter and his bestie Nick:

Desperate to avoid his family’s judgment about his perpetual single status, Peter (Michael Urie) convinces his best friend Nick (Philemon Chambers) to join him for the holidays and pretend that they’re now in a relationship. But when Peter’s mother (Kathy Najimy) sets him up on a blind date with her handsome trainer James (Luke Macfarlane)— the plan goes awry.

The film was announced in March 2021 and the cast shot in during the spring. Single All the Way lands on Netflix on Dec. 2 and is already generating buzz.

Fans react to ‘Single All the Way’ trailer

In a first for the platform, this Netflix romance story features two gay leads, and it has people excited. When the trailer dropped, social media users immediately counted themselves in thanks to Urie and Coolidge in the cast. But many are also praising the storyline for going the Hallmark route of having a saccharine happy ending for its main characters.

On Netflix’s YouTube channel, commenters chimed in under the trailer. “Sooo excited for this. I love cheesy Christmas movies and now I feel validated by one,” wrote one. “Friends to lovers! Fake dating! Gay people finding love! I’m so excited! After Happiest Season ended up kind of depressing, I’m excited for this one,” added another.
