Snoop Dogg Recalls the Time Queen Elizabeth II Had His Back: ‘That’s My Gal’
When it was first revealed years ago that Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart were good friends, many were surprised that the two stars from opposite worlds were close. Well, now the rapper has surprised fans once again announcing that Queen Elizabeth II is his “gal.”
Here’s what the Doggfather said about Britain’s monarch having his back.
Snoop Dogg’s high-profile murder case
In 1993, Snoop Dogg, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, was charged with first-degree murder after a member of a rival gang was gunned down by Snoop’s bodyguard McKinley Lee, who is said to have fired the shot while inside the rapper’s vehicle.
Snoop maintained his innocence, and the case went to trial. Eventually, jurors acquitted Snoop and Lee on the charges, including conspiracy to commit assault in connection with the 1993 death of Philip Woldemariam. But according to the hip-hop artist, while that was going on people were trying to get him kicked out of certain countries where he was scheduled to do shows.
“They kicked me out the U.K. ‘Kick this evil b****** out,’” Snoop said during a recent interview with DJ Whoo Kid, referring to a 1994 headline in the Daily Star. “It’s a headline. … That s*** is documented. They had a picture of me on the front. … They was like, ‘Kick this evil b****** out.’”
Queen Elizabeth wouldn’t allow Snoop to be banned from the U.K.
Snoop went on to say that while many residents in the U.K. were calling to have him banned from there, one woman stepped in to say he was allowed to be there. And that was the queen herself.
“This was while I was fighting a murder case, over there [in the U.K.] doing shows,” Snoop explained. “… But guess who came to my defense? Just take a guess. The queen. … The queen said, ‘This man has done nothing in our country. He can come.'”
He added: “That’s Harry and William’s grandmother, you dig? You think they weren’t there saying, ‘Grandma, please let him in, grandma. He’s OK. We love his music.’ ‘You know Harry, I’ll let him in for you. He’s not so bad after all, and he’s quite cute.’ … The queen, that’s my gal.”
Snoop previously said Prince William and Prince Harry weighed in on their grandmother’s decision
Snoop spoke about this incident in other interviews and also said then that William and Harry influenced the monarch’s decision.
In a conversation with The Guardian, Snoop said: “When they tried to kick me out of England, the queen made a comment that her grandbabies loved Snoop Doggy Dogg, and he had done no wrong in Britain, so she gave me permission to be in the country.
“Those grandbabies grew up to be Prince William and Harry, so I had influence on them, and they had influence on their grandmother, which enabled me to get into this beautiful country. They love my music, and it is what it is. There’s a mutual love and respect.”
