‘Breaking Bad’

Hailed as one of the greatest shows of all time, Breaking Bad centers Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a science teacher who begins selling drugs after being diagnosed with terminal cancer. He justifies his actions by saying he’s doing it for his family, but as the show progresses, he becomes another form of himself that even his wife and kids fear. Breaking Bad premiered in 2008 and ran for five immensely successful seasons before ending in 2013.

‘Ozark’

When Ozark premiered in 2017, it drew many comparisons to Breaking Bad for its plot. Like Breaking Bad, the show revolves around a family man who gets sucked into the drug game and winds up being successful at it. But those comparisons have since faded, as Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) has proven to be much different than Walter White, from his distinct personality to his unique approach to the business.

‘Power’

Created by Emmy-nominated writer Courtney Kemp, Power follows a businessman who leads a double life as a drug kingpin. James “Ghost” St. Patrick (Omari Hardwick) has plans of one day going “legit,” but he faces so many hurdles that he may never get out. Power ended in 2020 after six action-packed seasons, but there are several spinoffs that fans are loving too.

‘The Chi’

The brainchild of Emmy-winning writer Lena Waithe, The Chi revolves around a group of Chicagoans as they navigate the highs and lows of life on the city’s Southside. Since its 2018 premiere, the series has received praise from fans and critics alike for its characters and writing, even snagging a few award nominations over the years.

‘The Wire’

The Wire is an oldie but goodie. Released in 2002, it tells the story of the illegal drug trade in Baltimore, Maryland from the perspective of different people, including the dealers and the police. The show only received moderate ratings throughout its nearly six-year run, but it is now regarded as one of the best crime drama shows in TV history.
