The countdown is on until the return of Ozark, which means the theories and predictions are at an all-time high. Ben Davis’ survival is an idea that many fans have had since last season, but the speculation especially ramped up after the Ozark Season 4 trailer.

What happened to Ben in ‘Ozark’

By the end of Ozark Season 3, Ben had become a major liability for the Byrdes. Set on exposing the truth, he exploded on Helen Pierce in front of her daughter, Erin, who had been intentionally kept in the dark about Helen’s work. When Helen ordered to have Ben killed, Wendy Byrde took him out of town in an effort to protect him. But a string of public outbursts proved she would never be able to trust him to keep quiet.

With that, she called Helen’s henchman one evening and had him come get Ben. Back in the Ozarks, Marty Byrde was preparing to cremate him at the funeral home. But because Ben’s body wasn’t shown, many viewers believed Ben hadn’t actually been killed.

The ‘Ozark’ Season 4 trailer prompted a fresh round of theories that Ben survived

The season ultimately ended with Helen’s death at Omar Navarro’s hands. The show picks up from there, a teaser confirmed, finding the Byrdes at Navarro’s compound in the aftermath of the shooting.

The trailer for Ozark Season 4 shows the Byrdes returning from Mexico with a message for Darnell Snell: If she begins producing heroin again, Navarro’s response will be “quick and brutal.” But of course, she just laughs it off.

Nowhere in sight is Ben, but for some reason, some fans have a feeling that he’s alive.

Sharing their predictions for Ozark Season 4, one person wrote on Reddit: “Jonah is gonna kill everyone. Ben is alive.”

“I agree Ben is alive,” said another fan. “I think Marty and Jonah & Ruth will be ok. Wendy is gone she really is cold and heartless.”

When other readers pushed back on the theory about Ben’s survival, one fan came with the facts to support the idea. “We never see Ben’s body,” they stated. “Helen is killed by her hitman, Nelson. The same hitman that was sent to kill Ben. If Nelson killing Helen shocks you then Nelson not killing Ben should also shock you.”

The only thing is, Ben’s death has been confirmed by the showrunner, Chris Mundy. “I love the fact that people love [Ben] enough to come up with that theory,” Mundy said, via TVLine. “I wish it were true. But it ain’t true.”

Ben’s death will, however, have an impact on the new season

At the same time, Mundy teased that Byrdes’ role in his death would factor into the new season.

“I think you’re gonna learn what they want their endgame to be,” he said of the Byrdes. “And they’re going to have to reckon with it a little bit… If they’re trying to [find] an out, they’ve got to figure out if that’s what they want. And, if so, what’s the version of it that they want?”

Who knows what’ll happen to the Byrdes in the end. But what we do know is that Ben won’t be part of it.

Fans can watch the first part of Ozark Season 4 on Netflix on Jan. 21.
