Some People Believe Prince Harry Married Meghan Markle Precisely Because He Wanted to Leave the Royal Family
Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex announced in January 2020 that they would be stepping down as senior members of the royal family. The couple subsequently left the U.K. and moved with their son to Los Angeles.
Throughout all of this unprecedented royal event, Meghan has received a lot of criticism, with numerous people blaming her for coming in between Harry and his family. However, some royal commentators have put forth a new theory—that Harry chose to marry Meghan precisely because he wanted to leave royal life behind.
Meghan Markle was reportedly struggling with her royal role
Since the beginning, onlookers have questioned Meghan’s ability to fit in with the royal family. Before marrying Harry, Meghan was an actress. Additionally, she was outspoken about her political views and seemed to be adept at controlling her image as a celebrity.
In the fall of 2019, Harry and Meghan began suing a number of news outlets for allegedly invading their privacy. Recent court documents showed that Meghan, indeed, struggled with some aspects of royal life. Since she had to follow royal protocol of not speaking out against the press, Meghan reportedly felt “unprotected” by the royal family.
According to Princess Diana’s former butler, Paul Burrell, who talked to the Daily Mail, Meghan also realized being a royal meant having to “please everyone” and that “she wasn’t just marrying Harry.” This seemed to have clashed with her independent spirit.
Meghan Markle has largely been blamed for the royal exit
Although it is not clear whether Meghan or Harry initiated the idea of stepping down from being senior members of the royal family, critics have largely pointed their fingers at Meghan.
For example, royal author Tom Quinn told the Daily Star Online that Meghan’s “energy” what was convinced Harry to go along with her to Los Angeles, where he is now allegedly “struggling” and feeling “lost.”
“I’m not saying Harry absolutely hates it in America, but the point that’s been made to me is that there was this new exciting venture to get away from the British press and to make Meghan happy because she’s on her own territory,” Quinn said.
However, he also added, “It’s always been a problem, early on in the relationship, Meghan is a dynamo, she’s full of positive energy that would sweep Harry along but once the honeymoon is over, you still have to fill the days.”

However, not everyone agrees that Harry left his royal position by following along with what Meghan wanted to do. In fact, some onlookers now believe Harry had been planning to leave for a long time, and having Meghan around gave him the courage to finally do so.
According to SheKnows, a new book called Royals At War spoke to royal sources who believe in this theory.
Australian commentator Germaine Greer theorized that Harry was “looking for a way out,” which is why he decided to marry someone like Meghan, who would clearly have a hard time fitting in with the demands of the royal family.
British TV presenter Trisha Goddard also said, “I wonder if he didn’t choose a bride from another country because it gave him an out, because it gave him some security.”
