Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has finally hit theaters, building on the popular video game adaptation from 2020. The sequel will throw new challenges Sonic’s (Ben Schwartz) way while introducing fan-favorite characters like Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) and Knuckles (Idris Elba). It will also set up the Sonic Cinematic Universe. But should viewers stick around for an end-credits scene after Sonic the Hedgehog 2? Here’s what we know.

Paramount is setting up a Sonic Cinematic Universe

The first Sonic the Hedgehog movie featured an end-credits scene teasing the sequel, so it only makes sense that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 would take a similar approach to set up the third film.

SEGA and Paramount have already confirmed another outing for Sonic on the big screen. They’ve also announced a TV series centered on Idris Elba’s Knuckles, who serves as an antagonist in the second film.

Those who have played the Sonic games know there’s plenty of content to mine for television shows and movies. With that in mind, Paramount seems to be creating a Sonic Cinematic Universe of sorts. But does it tease future projects at the end of the latest release?

Does ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ have an end-credits scene?

With more Sonic content already confirmed, fans may be wondering if they can expect an end-credits scene after Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The answer is yes. Leaks suggested as much ahead of the film’s official release date. However, its theatrical debut confirms it’s worth waiting around — at least for the first half of the credits.

The Sonic sequel contains just one extra scene, and it’s snuggled between the two sets of credits that follow the film. In it, the military examines the aftermath of the fight between Sonic, Knuckles, and Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). And as they explore the wreckage, the film reveals that Stone (Lee Majdoub) is still around and biding his time. That sets up one potential villain for future projects — though it’s certainly not the biggest development from the end credits.

After alluding to another appearance from Stone in the future, Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s end-credits scene introduces a much bigger character: Shadow. Apparently, the military’s been keeping him in a research facility. And it looks like they’re unleashing him during Sonic’s next adventure.

Fans of the Sonic games will no doubt appreciate the end-credits scene from Sonic the Hedgehog 2, but those without knowledge of the source material may have questions. So, who is Shadow the Hedgehog and why is his introduction such a big deal?

Shadow is often referred to as the “Ultimate Life Form,” mirroring Sonic’s abilities in terms of strength and speed. In the games, he’s engineered and brought to life by Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of Jim Carrey’s character. And he serves as an antagonist to Sonic. However, much like Knuckles, he usually comes around in the end.

Clearly, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will feature Shadow in some capacity — likely as the series’ next Big Bad. That means viewers can count on some epic action sequences, along with higher stakes for Sonic. The fact that he works alongside Dr. Robotnik in the games means we may see Carrey again, too — though it’s possible the films will change Shadow’s storyline a bit.
