‘Spencer’: It Took 1054 Hours to Create the Dress Kristen Stewart Wears as Princess Diana
Fans of the royal family are most likely eagerly awaiting the premiere of the film Spencer, and they are in luck — the release date isn’t too far off. The highly anticipated drama will star Kristen Stewart as the late Princess Diana and focus primarily on her difficult decision to leave the royal family. Stewart herself is pumped for fans to see the film, saying that “I haven’t been this excited about playing a part, by the way, in so long.”
There is no doubt that a lot of work went into the making of the movie, from the clothes to the hair to Stewart adapting that iconic soft British accent that Princess Diana spoke with. The princess was known for her impeccable fashion sense, having debuted looks such as her “black sheep” sweater and that amazing “revenge dress” that is still talked about to this day. There is no doubt that the film’s wardrobe department went to great lengths to get the outfits just right, and now we have learned that it took 1054 hours to create one of the dresses that Kristen Stewart wore.
What is the premise of ‘Spencer’ and when can fans watch it?
Spencer premieres on Nov. 5th, 2021, and it is safe to say that the excitement is running rampant. So, what is it all about? Well, the concept is pretty unique since instead of focusing on Diana’s years as the wife of the future king or her tragic death, it is centered primarily around three of the most important days of her life. According to Elle, the movie will give a glimpse of what life was like for the princess behind the palace’s doors, her struggle with the massive amounts of attention she received, and the days over the Christmas holiday in which she decided to end her marriage to Prince Charles. Town & Country reports that Stewart did extensive research on the life of the princess before shooting the film, saying that “It’s one of the saddest stories to exist ever, and I don’t want to just play Diana—I want to know her implicitly.”
The making of that amazing dress
Diana herself was a fashion icon, so it’s no surprise that Stewart couldn’t wear just any dress in Spencer. Most of the outfits were almost identical replicas to those that the princess wore in real life, and it turns out that there is an evening dress that took a mind-boggling 1054 hours to create. People reports that Stewart is seen wearing a strapless evening gown with a satin bow tied around the waist and some very intricate embroidery in the movie. The embroidery took over 700 hours and features floral patterns of gold and silver sequins. The Haute Couture gown is nothing short of stunning and was created just for the film by Chanel. The dress is covered in pearls, and although we only get a quick glimpse in the trailer, we see enough to know that it is definitely fit for a princess.
The decision to cast Stewart as Diana in ‘Spencer’
Chances are that many actors would have jumped at the opportunity to play Princess Diana, so how was it decided to cast Stewart? According to E! Online, she was cast in Spencer by director Pablo Larraín, who said of Stewart, “The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it’s very beautiful to see. I think she’s going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature.” He also said that “Kristin can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile and ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need. The combination of those elements made me think of her.” We are sure she will be amazing as the People’s Princess, and can’t wait for the release date of one of the most anticipated movies of the year.
