Since Spider-Man joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Civil War, the universe has presented him as Tony Stark’s apprentice.

From the gadgets in his suits to the alibis that let him fight crime unnoticed, Stark has been by Peter’s side to guide him along the way. Even in Spider-Man: Far From Home, Parker is so close to Tony’s death that the aftermath allows Tony to guide him from the grave.

However, the further he gets, he’ll have to rely less on the billionaire and more on his intuition.

Spider-Man and Iron-Man

Iron Man was a lone wolf when his first solo adventure kicked off the MCU in 2008. However, after fighting off Ironmonger in the first film, he is recruited by Nick Fury to join a select group. From there, Stark’s fingerprints were on nearly every new Avenger. However, none of the new superheroes formed as tight a bond as Iron Man did with Peter Parker.

The other heroes joined the crew as adults. Meanwhile, Peter Parker is still a teenager grappling with puberty when he isn’t fighting crime. Stark allows him to get hands-on superhero training while also getting the father figure he lost when Uncle Ben died off-screen. While the first solo Spider-Man adventure was the web-slinger’s story, Iron Man was there to clean up after him and provide assistance.

All of this changed with Tony Stark’s sacrifice. Far From Home covered the immediate aftermath of his death and how it affected young Parker as he went back to high school. However, some Reddit fans believe it’s also getting something that’s been teased for years come into fruition.

Reddit chimes in

Fans on Reddit have often complained about the way that Spider-Man relied on Iron Man throughout their adventures. Stark provided the suits and the means for Parker to do his bidding. However, a side plot during all of his experiences is the way that the technology backfires. Parker’s failures to grasp the Iron Man tech in Spider-Man suits provided laughs, danger, and other peril.

If you ask the fans, this leads to when Parker has to take his destiny into his own hands.

User u/LittleYellowFish1 spoke on this, writing, “For all the “Iron Man Jr” complaints they get, his solo films mostly show Stark’s tech as a hindrance to Peter, and he always seems much more competent when he relies on his own abilities and the weapons he already had before Tony met him. So I think it’s only a matter of time before he builds his own suit.”

This thread kicked off a conversation. Many others agreed. While Parker gets some help from technology, it’s his intuition that always wins out. Stark might have meant well, but Parker cannot be the new leader until he knows what to do himself. To do this, many, like u/Snoo_36419, want him to build his suit and free himself from Stark’s shadow.

“I feel like the more Stark Tech given to Peter, the weaker he gets because he’s not familiar with it,” the user wrote. “He’s too inexperienced to handle tech made by somebody else, and it’s why in IW/EG, he never made much use of the features from the Homecoming suit or the Iron Spider (besides Iron Spider Arms). It’s always either his web shooters or his own strength. It’s also why he put in fewer features, less web combinations and decided not to install an AI in his FFH.”

Now, fans don’t have long to wait to see if this is on the horizon.

Spider-Man 3 is expected to be one of the most ambitious movie events to date. While Spider-Man movie at its core, it’s expected to open up the MCU in ways it’s never dealt with before, reportedly bringing fellow Spider-Men Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire alongside several returning villains from past franchises.

Further away from Tony’s death, Parker’s story will change forever when the film releases in December. However, whether it is when he thoroughly cuts all ties remains to be seen.
